After John got hold of me in his teeth and shook me like a rag doll, after a few months I recovered enough to find a business partner and we started opening movie theaters. We knew Tommy who owned the Roxy Theater on Sunset Strip. Tommy was running The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a gayish musical comedy. Our theaters were general audience family oriented and sometimes we ran the real old classics like “Gone With The Wind” Wizard of OZ” “Singing in the Rain” and so on. Our theaters had large screens, big audiences, and fabulous sound systems, people loved the old fashioned movie experience with double features and cartoons.
Tommy invited us to the Roxy one night to experience the Rocky Horror Picture Show, there was a lot of straight people there dressed up as characters of the movie. It looked like a fun way to break the ice on homophobia and maybe reduce the violence from gay bashers gangs who were going to Hollywood Blvd and beating up on anyone they thought might be gay, it was a big Hollywood problem at that time.
So we were talked into running that film also as a midnight show on the weekends. We also ran some others of comedy like “La Cage aux Folles” all with good intent.
Never in a million years did we expect that the general public was so twisted and sick and perverted that they would go off the deep end and express themselves like Rachel Levine, or Drag Queen Story Time, or drag queens shaking there ass at children watching a parade.
