God’s Secret: the Center of the Universe

Discussing current events and how they relate to Biblical prophesy. What are some critical signs are pointing to the imminent Rapture of the Church?

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. (John 1:1-3)

.

Mankind has gone through many stages of knowledge in the last 6,000 years. On July 20, 1969, the Eagle module from Apollo 11 landed at Tranquility Base. Neil Armstrong made history by becoming the first person to walk on the moon.

.

Just as a child grows up, and learns that they are not the center of everything, so has Man reached an end of that childhood innocence in 1969.

.

The ancient belief of Greek and Egyptian proto-scientists was that the Earth was the center of the universe, and everything revolved around it. Nowhere in the Bible are we told that the earth is at the center of the universe. For many centuries, however, people believed that Claudius Ptolemaeus (or Ptolemy) and others were correct when they advocated an earth-centered universe. It’s natural to trust “the experts,” such as Ptolemy; plus, the general human tendency is to view things primarily in relation to ourselves and our experiences. From our vantage point, the sun does seem to revolve around the earth.

.

Nicolaus Copernicus was a Renaissance-era mathematician and astronomer, who in 1510 formulated a model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than the Earth at the center of the universe.

.

His heliocentric theory was a major event in the history of science, triggering the Copernican Revolution and making a pioneering contribution to the Scientific Revolution.

.

In 1755, Immanuel Kant asserted that the nebulae are really galaxies separate from, independent of, and outside the Milky Way Galaxy; he calls them island universes.

Edwin Hubble measures the distances

In 1923, the universe was still thought to be a small place. Astronomers believed the Milky Way galaxy was at least tens of thousands light-years across, but they thought it was all there was to the universe — one grand galaxy spiraling in a lonesome ballet. Then Edwin Hubble measured the distances to a few nearby spiral nebulae (galaxies). The distances placed them far outside our Milky Way, and implied that fainter galaxies are much more distant, and the universe is composed of many thousands of galaxies.

.

One of the most fundamental known unknowns in astronomy is just how many galaxies the universe contains. The Hubble Deep Field images, captured in the mid 1990s, revealed untold numbers of faint galaxies. It was estimated that the observable Universe contains between 100 to 200 billion galaxies.

According to the latest scientific discoveries, there is no center of the universe. The standard theories of cosmology state that the universe started with a “Big Bang” about 14 billion years ago and has been expanding ever since. Yet there is no center to the expansion; it is the same everywhere. The Big Bang should not be visualized as an ordinary explosion. The universe is not expanding out from a center into space; rather, the whole universe is expanding and it is doing so equally at all places, as far as we can tell.

.

The Copernican principle holds that we have no special place in the infinite, center-less universe. In the early 20th century, with the advent of Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity and the observation that the universe is expanding in all directions, that idea evolved into the cosmological principle, which assumes that the universe is the same everywhere and in every direction. In fancier terms, the universe is both homogeneous and isotropic.

.

We have come a long way from the belief that the Earth is the center of everything. However, the further out we investigate, the more we discover that the Earth is a rare planet in several ways. The Sun is a stable star, which means it has a long lifespan and is not likely to go through any major changes that would affect Earth’s habitability. Earth is located in the “habitable zone” around the Sun, which means it is at just the right distance to receive enough heat and light to support life.

.

Earth’s plate tectonics help to recycle elements through the planet, which is important for sustaining life. Earth has a strong magnetic field that protects the planet from harmful solar radiation. Earth’s atmosphere is made up of the right mix of gases, including oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, which helps to regulate the planet’s temperature and provide the necessary elements for life. Earth has large amounts of liquid water, which is essential for life.

.

What makes Earth even more remarkable is the intricate way in which it was created. The Bible tells us that Jesus Christ, the Word of God, was not only present at the beginning of creation but was also the active agent through whom all things were made (John 1:1-3). This means that the Earth, with all its life-supporting features, was carefully crafted by the loving hands of our Savior.

The Moon’s gravitational pull is responsible for the tides, which in turn played a role in the development of life in the oceans. The tides helped to circulate nutrients and oxygen, which were necessary for the evolution of complex life. Additionally, the Moon’s stabilizing effect on Earth’s axial tilt helped to create a stable climate, which was also important for the development of complex life.

.

Similarly, the presence of Jupiter in our solar system has had a profound impact on Earth’s habitability. With its immense gravitational field, Jupiter acts as a cosmic shield, deflecting comets and asteroids that could otherwise pose a threat to life on Earth. This protective role has allowed life to evolve and thrive on our planet without the constant fear of catastrophic impacts.

.

When we take a step back and examine the intricate design of Earth and its place in the universe, it becomes evident that none of this is a result of mere chance. The apostle Paul reminds us in Colossians 1:16-17, “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.

The creation account gives a day by day report on the preparation of the earth as man’s dwelling place. God’s attention focuses on this planet: “To the Lord your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it” (Deut. 10:14). On this planet, He implemented most of His creative ideas, as the Psalmist cries out: “. . . the earth is full of your creatures” (Ps. 104:24). No other astronomical body is called God’s footstool (Isa. 66:1; Acts 7:49). The clearest indication of the earth’s central position is that God’s own Son was sent here.

This passage reveals a profound truth: Jesus Christ is the center of the universe. God’s secret, revealed through His Word, is that He is the One who holds everything together, and it is through Him that all things were created. The Big Bang theory and the expansion of the universe point to a creator, and that creator is none other than Jesus Christ.

As we marvel at the beauty and complexity of the universe, let us remember that it is not a random occurrence but a carefully crafted masterpiece designed by the hand of God. The Copernican principle and the cosmological principle may suggest that we have no special place in the infinite, center-less universe, but the Bible tells us that we are loved and cherished by the One who created it all.

In John 14:6, Jesus declares, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” This statement reminds us that true meaning and purpose can only be found in Christ. As we navigate the challenges and uncertainties of life, let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.

Jesus Christ became a human being for our sake. He destroyed man’s sin exactly in that place where it had been introduced into the universe, namely the earth! The cross of salvation stood on Calvary and no other place in the cosmos. Jesus ascended to heaven from the earth, and He will return here as exalted Lord when He comes again.

So, as we continue to explore the wonders of the universe and make new discoveries, let us never lose sight of the One who created it all. May we always remember that Jesus Christ is the center of everything, and may we find our purpose and meaning in Him alone.

.

In childhood’s innocence, we once believed
That Earth, our home, was all there was to see.
The Sun and stars revolved around our world,
A simple truth that ancients once unfurled.

But as we grew in knowledge and in years,
The veil was lifted, and the truth appeared.
Copernicus and Hubble showed the way,
A universe so vast, beyond our sway.

No center could be found, no special place,
Just galaxies abounding in His grace.
The Big Bang echoed through the cosmos wide,
Expansion without end, on every side.

Yet in this grand design, a secret lies,
A truth that’s whispered in the starlit skies.
For Christ, the Word, was there before all time,
The One through whom all things came into rhyme.

The Earth, so rare, so perfectly arrayed,
With life-sustaining wonders, lovingly made.
The Moon, the tides, and Jupiter’s embrace,
All part of God’s great plan, His sovereign ways.

And in the midst of all this cosmic dance,
The Son of God stepped down, took human stance.
On Calvary’s cross, He bore our every sin,
That we might be redeemed and born again.

For Jesus is the center of it all,
The One who holds together great and small.
In Him, all things consist, and find their place,
The Author and Perfecter of our faith.

So as we gaze upon the starry light,
And ponder all the marvels in our sight,
Let us remember God’s great love divine,
And fix our eyes on Christ, the true design.

For in His presence, we shall find our rest,
Our purpose, and our joy, forever blessed.
The secret of the universe, now known,
Is Jesus Christ, the Cornerstone, alone.

.

If you are not sure that you are saved, you can accept Christ into your life right now, by praying:

“Lord Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins.  Please forgive my sins and give me the gift of eternal life.  I ask you into my life and heart to be my Lord and Savior.”
