Randall Carlson connected the dots about the fires in his podcast Kosmographia.
The date was October 8, 1871.
Chicago was first. Then a few hours later the Peshtigo fires happened, in Wisconsin close to Lake Michigan. Then, across the lake, Michigan towns burned all the way across the state to the Lake Huron shore. In the same day.
First hand accounts of the survivors depicted spontaneous combustion.
Randall suggests that a passing meteor skipped across the upper atmosphere, leaving clouds of acetylene gas, among other gases. Being heavier than air, these pockets of acetylene descended down to surface level and ignited with astronomical temperatures, melting horse trailer hitches, but leaving nearby rope untouched by flames.
