Occupy Outreach: Stop Foreclosures and Homelessness NOW!

 Homeowner and retired school teacher Faith Parker with her daughter Sandra met an enthusiastic group of supporters consisting of occupiers, homeowner advocates and social media for a press conference last Wednesday at her home. Bertha Herrera, the Chaplain whose house was boarded up just a day later, was also on hand to speak.

 On January 1st, Faith and her daughter were part of a panel at the All Saints Church discussion as part of the Occupy New Year’s Day Summit with homeowner advocate Carlos Marroquin. 

Millions of foreclosures have happened across the U.S. now since at least 2008. The states of California and Nevada, the Attorney General of New York, and others are joining into investigations as of December 2011.  

Raising awareness is where it begins, but actions are NOW needed for those who were taken advantage of and need places to live.  It isn’t as simple as what we often hear explained to us as ‘it’s just business,’ but business as usual when millions more people are displaced from their homes is not only unacceptable, it’s immoral and simply insane.  

Even with efforts of the faith-based communities and other non-profits to tackle the enormous variety of problems over the years, the reality in the depth of issues with the crisis of homelessness, which has existed for decades, continues.  It is so vast that it can seem overwhelming especially as our street population grows in cities like Los Angeles which has seen its’ homeless population skyrocket in size since the 1980′s. 

The foreclosure issue in itself should open more people’s eyes to the reality that a lot of what we have relied upon has failed us and is continuing to fail us. 

Stop foreclosures and homelessness!
