My March Against Monsanto

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

I intended to make the 2 hour drive to the nearest gathering today, but my car said it did not want to go. I am not mechanically inclined enough to argue with it, so instead I will march over to my garden and plant the rest of it. I will use only heirloom seed, and no Monsanto products will touch my garden, ever, at least not by my hand. There are crop dusters and pollen in the wind I cannot control, but Monsanto has legal immunity when they contaminate my garden.

I do appreciate the marchers today, and wish them the very best. I was looking forward to the camaraderie, the fellowship of like minded people, but my march will have an impact, too. The fastest way to end the Monsatanic destruction of our food supply is to take control of it ourselves. I wonder how many of those who will take the time to go walk around and wave signs for a couple of hours will also take the personal responsibility to supply their own food? While I appreciate grand gestures of political activism, I have begun to realize they are largely ineffective. It looks to me like we are in Oz, and the only way home is to use the slippers on our own feet.

Today, millions of well meaning people will attempt to send a message to our politicians and to the corporate monster, Monsanto. They will object to what is going on, and demand someone make it stop, the general formula for all political protests these days. It leaves me wondering, do these people even understand what is going on, and who it is they are asking to make it stop? From where I sit, it looks a bit like mass insanity. Monsanto has been waging war on our consciousness since we were children.

“Monsanto House of the Future
Welcome to the walk-through attraction that provides a glimpse of how you’ll be living in future. You won’t find traditional furniture styles or natural materials in the House of the Future. Everything is ultra-modern and almost entirely synthetic. It’s a demonstration of style and technology.”
“At Disneyland, the House of the Future opened in 1957 on a prime site just off the Hub, adjacent to the Circarama theater. The House of the Future was one of two free attractions sponsored by Monsanto. The other was the Hall of Chemistry, which closed in 1966.”

So we are battling a corporation that in 1957 started telling us we WILL be living in plastic houses, at Disneyland. That is some powerful conditioning on a child in “wonderland.” I recall being indoctrinated in the miracles of GMO food in elementary school. The entire pro-GMO argument is the ability to “feed the world” which sounds nice, but is merely a euphemism for “control the global food supply.” (About here is where ominous music should play in your head.) But it is not just food. I wonder how many people know that Monsanto is Pharmacia? Yes, the drug company.

When people call me “crazy conspiracy theorist” it merely amuses me. I am a crazy conspiracy researcher, and can produce a mountain of proof that there are seriously crazy conspiracies going on in the places of utmost power. These are only “theories” in the minds of those who refuse to examine the facts – the types of minds that are attached to mouths that rely on GMO prepackaged food and run to the doctor to get a pill every time they get a pain. Coincidence? I think not.

So, how tangled is this web? On the eve of this march, the “elected officials” of the people marching reaffirmed their commitment to the “Farmer Assurance Provision” of Section 735 of US H.R. 933, better known as “the Monsanto Protection Act.”

(This link seems to have issues, please google or search Russia Times for the article titled “On the eve of March against Monsanto Senate shoots down GMO labeling bill.”)

“Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the bill’s sponsor, told the Huffington Post before the vote. “All over the world, in the European Union, in many other countries around the world, dozens and dozens of countries, people are able to look at the food that they are buying and determine through labeling whether or not that product contains genetically modified organisms.”

Sanders also explained that the Food and Drug Administration requires more than 3,000 ingredients to be labeled on food products, but that GMOs are not on this list.

But opponents of the measure argued that GMOs should not be labeled, since the FDA has not made scientific conclusions that would require it. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), chair of the Agriculture Committee, said the amendment that was shot down was not relevant to the farm bill. She also emphasized the importance of Monsanto in providing foods at lower prices that help feed people around the world – an argument often made by supporters of the biotech giant.”

So, we are expecting the FDA to tell us Monsanto / Pharmacia is not safe? It will NEVER HAPPEN. It is official policy.

“Quoted in the New York Times Magazine (October 25, 1998, “Playing God in the Garden”), Philip Angell, Monsanto’s director of corporate communications, famously stated: “Monsanto shouldn’t have to vouchsafe the safety of biotech food. Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible. Assuring its safety is the FDA’s job.”

From the Federal Register, Volume 57, No.104, “Statement of [FDA] Policy: Foods Derived from New Plant Varieties,” here is what the FDA had to say on this matter: “Ultimately, it is the food producer who is responsible for assuring safety.”

Politicians know what the people want, and they know what the corporations want, and they cater to the ones who cut them big checks come campaign time.

Running to politicians and asking them to make Monsanto stop being evil is almost childlike in its naivete’, but it is time to grow up. If you want a safe food supply for yourself and your family, plant a garden. If you want to get serious independence in a small area, start an aquaponics system. The way to get rid of monsters in the real world is essentially the same as how you get rid of monsters under your bed. You take a good, hard look into that dark space, then you take personal responsibility and crawl into bed. Only this time, it is the garden bed.
