Protests In South Korea
As December began, approximately 30,000 protesters marched on the South Korean capital of Seoul today, protesting new pro businesses labour laws and the erosion of personal and political freedoms.
Seoul police had initially banned the protests but organisers managed to overturn this after appealing to the Seoul Administrative Court, which ruled to allow the demonstration could go ahead.
The main focus of the protests was aimed at what many see as draconian labour laws and the stripping of workers rights under new laws, making dismissal of employees easier.
The government has also come under severe criticism for plans to impose new history textbooks on schools, where President Park Geun-Hye has been accused of trying to turn South Korea’s national history into her family’s private history.
A previous protest which took place last month ended in a riot with water cannons being used by authorities to prevent marchers from getting to the presidential palace.
