Reeling from the growing support for populism sweeping throughout Europe the European Union have resorted to East Germany’s levels of suppression. In Germany, memories of the hated STASI policed regime has brought tens of thousands onto the Strasse to protest at their regime’s malicious use of copyright laws to clamp down on free expression expressed through social media.

The planned changes would require those tech giants such as Facebook and YouTube take responsibility for copyright materials users upload to their platforms. Though the measure is claimed to protect copyright holders, the smarter claim it is being used to further restrict freedom of speech.  Over 250,000 court cases were heard in Germany alone in a state attempt to stifle clarification of historical facts.

Tens of thousands of people in different German cities gathered for a massive protest against the copyright reforms planned by the European Union. The indignation is connected with legislation: in particular, Article 11, which allows publishers to prosecute social media platforms if they link to their stories, and Article 13, putting legal responsibility on platforms for users uploading copyrighted material.

Though the reform is said to help writers to protect their copyright, opponents of the legislation insist it would force websites to install filters, hinder online creativity and restrict the freedom of speech.

According to the news agency, the biggest demonstration was held in Munich, where some 40,000 gathered to protest at the suppressive legislation, marching under the motto “Save your internet”.
