Naya Clinics Can Reverse the Effects of Covid-19 and its Impacts on Relationships

We’re living in unprecedented times. A pandemic and sky-rocketing divorce rates. How are the two correlated? Sam Nabil, Founder of Naya Clinics, explains that “when you are forced to make changes to your lifestyle, problems can arise, especially in stressful times.” When the novel coronavirus outbreak began in China, lockdowns were implemented and couples were forced to face their marital problems.

Some argued over too little time spent together (despite being in lockdown together), others squabbled over house chores and other household tasks such as taking care of their children. Sam Nabil says that there’s an easy fix: communication. Setting boundaries and expectations would help alleviate some of the stress that comes from handling everything by themselves, especially in the case of stay-at-home parents. The working parent oftentimes do not know where they stand and how they can help. By detailing a plan, the couples can easily avoid these unnecessary arguments.

Having spent some time overseas, Nabil understood that there are certain cultural differences. The Chinese are notorious for not communicating or showing affection due to their upbringing. Stoic men took after their fathers, and women were oppressed under a patriarchal system. However, it’s the 21st century, and the world has moved on and so should the men and their archaic beliefs. If you are expecting your woman to serve you as though you lived in ancient times, it would do nothing beneficial to your relationship and might even cause it to crash and burn. Equality comes from respect and if you show your significant other respect, you will be able to live in better harmony.

Nabil suggests that couples tone down their criticism, “while communication is vital to healthy relationships, too much of a good thing can be bad, especially if we’re offering negative feedback.” There are also variables we must take into consideration, for instance, perhaps your partner’s coping mechanism might be to eat, another might be to clean. When you pair these two together, you get excuses such as “we’re not compatible” but the truth is that if we offer each other a little more empathy and compassion, we’re able to easily look past another’s messiness instead of nagging them or calling them out on it.

Too few couples offer each other the same kindness that they offer strangers, and this is apparent in many Asian cultures – they are often polite to their peers at work, strangers they meet on the subway, but go home to unload on their families. “Time alone can also work wonders,” Nabil suggests, “especially when we’re almost stepping on each other’s toes 24/7, giving each other space and time outs alone gives us the opportunity to regroup mentally.”

However, this is not exclusive to China. In Europe, the same phenomenon is on the rise, peppered with domestic violence. Naya Clinics offers support to those who are feeling overwhelmed or apprehensive about their mental health and their relationships. With their online therapy that is open globally, Nabil hopes to be of service to those who need help.
