Special Metal Types for Your Engagement Ring
Are you thinking about that special day, but maybe don’t know where to start? Well, start with the band of the ring. Take a look at our suggestions to see what special metal would suit your other half’s hand best.
Gold
The go-to, the traditional, the only right answer to a lot of people is gold. If archduke Maximilian of Austria’s great tradition, or rather, his betrothed’s request, is to be upheld, it has to be a “ring set with a diamond, and also a gold ring”. It’s the blueprint that engagement rings have followed for centuries, and given the permanence of diamonds, due to the high price, it’s a trend that has been passed down through generations.
Tradition or not, a gold engagement ring can be very stylish. For example, throughout 2022 the trend appears to be very thin gold bands with a relatively sizable diamond.
White Gold
The switch up in gold color, but not entirely abandoning tradition has meant that white gold has become very popular. It makes sense: it’s gold, but not. Its material is gold, but an untrained eye would be forgiven for thinking it was silver or platinum. It’s also cheaper than platinum, so while you’re still shilling out for a rightfully pricey ring and all the symbolism that holds, you don’t have to go hungry to do it.
Platinum
However, white gold’s closest cousin, platinum, has a lot of advantages over white gold. White gold is likely to yellow over time, due to the fact that it is actually yellow gold that has been through a chemical process. A platinum ring, on the other hand, is pure platinum and isn’t about to fade or revert back to anything other than platinum. Plus, it’s the most hypoallergenic material that a band can be made from. If your bride-to-be breaks out in rashes the day after proposing, it’s not a bad omen, it’s an allergic reaction: swap it out for platinum.
Silver
Silver is also a very hypoallergenic option and offers a high shine and neutral tone that goes well with any skin tone. That’s just a couple of reasons why it’s one of the most popular options when shopping for engagement rings. It’s also a more affordable option so you can afford a more humble price tag while enjoying the fact that people not looking too hard are likely to assume it’s white gold. However, it is easy to tarnish silver and will take a bit of maintenance to keep shiny.
Mixed
Who says you can’t have it all? A lot of rings nowadays incorporate a couple of different metals in the band. Some of them aim to be bold and mix gold with the contrasting tone of the other options, and some go for the subtler choice of mixing, say, silver and platinum, for a ring that is the same color but with a slightly different finish. If you’re looking for something a little bit different, you might want to look into that idea.
