Holy Shroud Image Created By Radiation?

Radiation could have created Holy Shroud image

The Holy Shroud

An expert in the field has published a new study that suggests radiation as the likely cause of image formation on the Shroud

Andrea Tornielli

The Shroud of Turin, the linen sheet which, according to tradition, Jesus’ body had been wrapped in and carries the imprint of a man who was crucified in the same way described in Gospels, is still a mystery. A recently published study has concluded that the most likely hypothesis for the explanation of the origin of the image imprinted on the shroud is radiation, particularly the “corona discharge effect.”

This is according to Giulio Fanti, Professor of Professor of Mechanical and Thermic Measurements at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Padua who has been carrying out research on the Shroud for a number of years. The academic has presented the results of his study in an article that has just been published by the Journal of Imaging Science and Technology.

Ever since the Italian photographer Secondo Pia obtained the first photographic reproductions of the Shroud in 1898, many researchers have put forward image formation hypotheses,” Fanti told Italian daily newspaper La Stampa. “Many interesting hypotheses have been examined to date, but none of these is able to explain the mysterious image fully. None of the reproductions obtained manages to portray characteristics that are similar to the ones found on the Turin Shroud.”

The article scientifically examines all core hypotheses, comparing them to 24 of the Shroud’s unique characteristics, deemed to be the most important of the more than one hundred features published up until recently in international scientific journals. The first hypotheses formulated by researchers who analysed the first photographs taken of the Shroud in the early 1900’s are being reviewed and examined. For example the theories which attributed the formation of the depicted figure to chalk or ammonia, to the effect of lightening or a mould containing zinc powder. “I therefore took the most sophisticated of all the hypotheses into consideration, such as those relating to the diffusion of gas or to the Shroud’s contact with the body that had been wrapped in a sheet soaked in aromas and various other substances,” Professor Fanti said.

hmm.. i can’t view the second page of this article. anyway, this is not actually new. this particular paper may be, but studies and a documentary concerning a radiated image has been out for quite some time. in the documentary, information about the image goes well beyond what i see here. not only is the image the result of radiation (so claimed), but is in fact a negative image much like a photo negative. and more than that, a 3-D positive computer generated image has been produced showing an actual 3D representation of the face and figure. again, so claimed.
a fascinating documentary. maybe i can find it?

When the media is not specifically CONTRADICTING the Doctrine of “resurrection” as a Doctrine of ‘Rebirth’, it is DISTRACTING people with all kinds of utterly useless information about any number of tangential issues.

Ultimately, it makes NO difference at all what is the source of the image on the shroud. None of that information is, in any way, relevant to the Truth.

It comes under the category of religious ‘entertainment’.

Such stories as this, thus, are quite reliable money-makers because the vast majority of people are much more interested in being *entertained* than they are in being told the Truth.

This is the full article there is no second page.

ok, thanks anon.. but regarding points raised by Michael Cecil, i fail to see why this would necessarily contradict the doctrine of resurrection. in fact, the last sentence of the article makes reference to viewing the phenomena in that regard if the “scientific” analysis is not accepted. however i see it as a plausible explanation for the occurrence. why is it not possible for the event to have manifested in that manner?
also, if one is to relegate this explanation to “entertainment”, personally i accept that as well being that, often it is easier to eventually apprehend what is true through methods one can readily grasp. the path to Truth isn’t always straight.

Elijah is said to have raised from the dead a widow’s son.

Jesus is said to have raised from the dead the daughter of Jairus and Lazarus.

Does that mean that the *Doctrine* of “resurrection” is to be understood as a physical raising of a dead body from the grave?

      Not at all.

Such raisings from the dead were, rather, a simple but dramatic demonstration of the Power of God…

Just as there is no Christian *doctrine* of changing water into wine or *doctrine* of multiplying loaves and fishes or *doctrine* of walking on water.

But for some, Pharisaical reason, the Christians interpret the physical raising of Jesus from the dead as validating the *doctrine* of a physical resurrection.

      Bizarre.

    • RAINSCRYPT

interesting. are you saying that a Christian teaching of a doctrine of the resurrection is wrongly stated or that there is no such thing as a doctrine of resurrection? a case of confused terms? (resurrection/rebirth)? i would really appreciate your opinion.
