NBC’s ‘The New Normal’ Mocks Jesus Christ and Christianity

We first reported on the new NBC sitcom, The New Normal a show about a gay male couple attempting to adopt a surrogate child as another step in Hollywood ‘s quest to redefine marriage for America. Now the show has gone even further by blaspheming Jesus Christ, mocking the Bible and trying to change the Christian faith altogether.

On the episode titled “The Godparent Trap,” the gay male couple who star in the show are seeking godparents for their surrogate child which leads one character to question his spiritual state (having been raised a Catholic). From the opening scene, the character Brian, who was raised as a Catholic, discusses looking at Jesus’ body on a cross and envying Jesus’ physique From there the show enters into a series of disrespectful, blasphemous remarks.

Among the other blasphemous remarks made during the half-hour episode:

• A female friend who is unable to conceive says: “God took a divine dump on my dreams.”

• When the surrogate mother is asked by her daughter if she has godparents, she replies: “No. Your grandmother said if I brought an illegitimate child into church it would be like killing Jesus twice.”

• Brian then goes to a church which opens the door for blasphemy of the Christian faith:

• Brian sees a painting of the Apostles and says: “Twelve dudes sitting around gossiping and drinking wine. You call that the Last Supper? I call that a Tuesday night.”

• When looking at a picture of Mary, the mother of Jesus, he says: “Hey, Mary — I’m a virgin, too. I’ve also slept in a barn with three wise men.” Then he turns to an image of Jesus on the cross, and says, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t be talking trash about your mother. But you know who judges me? Your father.”

• Jumping on the recent trend to equate the gay rights movement with the Black Civil Rights movement Brian says: “I don’t want to be forced to use a separate water fountain. Why can’t the church just accept all people? … You toss Jesus’ name around. You don’t exactly practice what you preach. Jesus wouldn’t judge people on their sexuality because Jesus loved everyone.”
• In one of the few instances that Scripture is quoted, the verse “my sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” was changed to “my hamster hears my voice..” for a pet funeral.

• In response, the priest goes into a tirade explaining that Jesus Christ was an angry man who was a “fighter” like “Chuck Norris.

While these examples may seem like “just jokes” or “having a little fun” to some, it is not a light matter in the Bible. Not only does God take the respect given to His name seriously, there are many passages in Scripture that discuss the sin of blasphemy, a major offense to The Lord.

The Spirit of Blasphemy

Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. – Exodus 20:7.

Webster’s 1828 dictionary defines blasphemy as: An indignity offered to God in words, writing, or signs; impiously irreverent words or signs addressed to, or used in reference to, God; speaking evil of God; also, the act of claiming the attributes or prerogatives of deity.

The name of God is to be spoken of with reverence and respect. It is a serious sin to use the Lord’s name in a blasphemous manner. Yet for those who oppose God in their hearts, blasphemy is a sign:

O God, how long shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever? – Psalm 74:10.

Remember this, that the enemy hath reproached, O LORD, and that the foolish people have blasphemed thy name. – Psalm 74:18.

The sad truth is that when you are not a born again believer in Jesus Christ is at war with God:

For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. – Romans 8:5-8.

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defines enmity as: “The quality of being an enemy; the opposite of friendship; ill will; hatred; unfriendly dispositions; malevolence.”

This is the spiritual state of all unsaved people today. It just the human conscience that keeps a person from falling into outright hostility to God. However the more one gives into sinful rebellion, the closer that person comes to having their conscience “seared with a hot iron” thus opening the door to blasphemy being normal. Romans Chapter 1, which explains the spiritual source of the sin of homosexuality, details the downward spiral into rebellion a person takes once they reject God:

Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. — Romans 1:21-27.

The rejection of God leads to “vain imaginations” in the mind of a person. Because of our sinful nature, it is easy to think we know what’s truly right and wrong “in our hearts” regardless of what God says. In this instance, The Lord is replaced as God by oneself. And when a person becomes their own god, they will be likely to fall into any type of behavior as their heart becomes ‘darkened” and more prone to even greater sin. Notice the next step is taking the glory of the “incorruptible God” and making it into an image made “like to corruptible man.” This TV show first denies the Bible’s truths on homosexuality being sin and that tries to make God like a man by repeatedly belittling and mocking Him. They then try to turn the truth into a lie by saying Jesus is not against homosexuality and promoting the lifestyle all the same.
This is a sad place for a person to be and this is not the first time that “New Normal” creator Ryan Murphy has done this. Murphy is also the creator of the TV show Glee, which aired an episode entitled Heart that also mocked Christians and the Bible. Pray for Murphy, the writers and all of those involved with this show that they seek peace with God through Jesus rather than railing at The Lord in rebellion. Romans 1 finishes by describing the full process of falling into open sin and getting deeper into anger at The Lord:

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. –  Romans 1:28-32.

As the world moves farther from God and the truths of the Bible where there was once a basic form of respect for Christianity has turned to outright hostile blasphemy. This of course is all a part of Satan’s plan. Blasphemy must become “the new normal” for society as it moves closer to the time of the reign of the Antichrist, the false Messiah who will rule the Earth in the final years before the Second Coming of Christ. The Bible states of this man, called “the Beast” in Revelation 13:

And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. – Revelation 13:5-8.

The Antichrist will be the ultimate blasphemer. He will disrespect the God of the Bible and all the good angelic host who live in Heaven. He will also obviously hate believers in Jesus Christ, make war with them and overcome them. And this man will not only rule the world, the people will be in awe of the Beast and worship him. At present the seeds of Satan’s false Gospel are being sown to move the thoughts of society towards his ways of sinful rebellion and away from the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The media has played a massive role in this and The New Normal is the latest step in pushing the boundaries to mock and even redefine Christianity.

Remaking Christianity

The underlying theme in the Godparent Trap episode is that Christianity is changing to accommodate homosexuality, gay marriage and presumably any manner of alternative lifestyle. During the first scene with his priest, the character Brian expresses his wishes that homosexuality be accepted and not considered a sin by the church. The Priest tells Brian “there are churches out there for you”, referring to the emergent, apostate churches that are “gay-affirming” and no longer consider homosexuality a sin (country music singer Carrie Underwood, who we covered in a prior article, attends such a church). In response to this suggestion from the priest, Brian once again invokes the Civil Rights movement and compares attending a gay-affirming church to “drinking from a separate water fountain.” In other words, those types of churches are not satisfactory – all traditional churches must change their view of homosexuality as a sin for there to be true “justice.”

The priest then uses Jesus’ “fighting against injustice” in the Bible as a justification for Brian to seek to change all Christian churches to accept and embrace homosexuality. Of course this point misses the fact that Jesus did not come to Earth to fight injustice, He came to take the punishment for the sins of the world (which includes the sins of homosexuals). The episode ends with the priest once again encouraging Brian to continue to “fight” against Biblical standards and insist that homosexuality no longer be thought of as a sin (along with the priest now making a comment about Jesus’ physique in a derogatory manner).

The sad truth is that the church is indeed changing. Many churches are abandoning the Bible for their own ideas and feelings based on what is acceptable and popular in society today. Yet the Bible says: ” Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” (Hebrews 13:8). God The Father says in Scripture: “For I am the LORD, I change not..” (Malachi 3:6). Christianity is not something that changes with the times or is meant to accommodate the trends of what people want or what a TV sitcom may be trying to preach. It is God’s eternal Word, to be read, believed and followed. Pray for repentance among those in Hollywood and in the apostate churches of the world today to look to God with humility and respect, rather than enmity and mockery. The Book of James says: “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” Pray for less of a “new normal” and more humility which is the first step to forgiveness and eternal life.
