“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” – Psalm 27:1.
Life can pose so many challenges it is easy to fall into a state of fear. It could be a fear of pain or suffering. Maybe fear of just getting by to the next day. David wrote Psalm 27 in one of his times of tribulation. At several points he found his life in jeopardy as his powerful enemies were hunting him down seeking to kill him, certainly a frightening situation. And in his words there is an understanding that even though his earthly eyes gave him good reason to be afraid, he could rest in the fact that “The LORD is my light and my salvation..” Psalm 27 is one of the many chapters in this wonderful book that a Christian can draw on today overcome the fears they are facing in life.
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
The light was not just the light that is in all people, to know deep in their hearts that there is a God. It was the light of salvation that comes from knowing and believing that God has secures your soul through His own plan of redemption – the Messiah. The Coming Savior had been revealed all through Old Testament Scripture and David trusted in the promise that the coming “seed of the woman” would redeem him and keep his soul secure eternally. This was “The Light.” Jesus confirmed this when he said: “… I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12).
So with the knowledge that the Spirit of God Himself was protecting David, who was there on earth to be afraid of? No one. The Lord gives Christian believers their strength of knowing the have eternal life and there is no reason to fear people in this life who can only harm your temporarily.
When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.
If you are a born again believer, God will put stumbling blocks in the way of people who are out to hurt you. Psalm 34 confirms that the angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him. Never think for a moment that in any earthly challenge you are alone. The wicked enemies can come in many forms. It could be someone who is out to physically harm you. It could be a co-worker who wants to see you flounder. It could be a classmate who wants to hurt you or damage your reputation. It could be a former friend now attacks you out of bitterness or jealousy. If you are reading this, praise God that you are still standing strong despite their best efforts. When enemies are out to hurt you, each new day is a victory and demonstration of God’s grace.
Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.
Suffering and trials are guaranteed for a Christian. It is a part of the process of picking up your cross, denying yourself and following Christ in this cursed world. The road to Golgotha was a painful one for our Savior, and as His servants we should expect no better treatment from the world than our Master did. But in that walk Jesus made carrying His cross, He won the battle before we even stepped on the field. And now He is with you in every battle. This is why David wrote: “Ye as I walk through the valley of the shadow of death..” There is no avoiding the difficult conflict sometimes. But it is maintaining your faith through it that will glorify The Lord and sustain you. So even in those times of trouble, even when your enemies or those against you are making war, do not be afraid. Jesus has equipped you for any challenge life brings. Just believe in Him. This is why the Lord said: “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world..” (John 16:33). Do you really believe Jesus Christ has saved your soul? Then be of good cheer, because in doing that He also overcame every problem you can possibly face.
One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.
What is your focus in life? What is your top priority? If it lies in this world, then you should be afraid because it is something you can lose. If your top priority in life Is seeking God, desiring God, dwelling in His house (whether that be church or the Heavenly temple) then rejoice, because what you value the most can never be taken from you. Keeping the heavenly perspective in every difficult situation is critical to overcoming fear. Knowing that God is on the throne and that at the end of the day, your salvation, faith and time spent seeking God is most important, will embolden you trust in Him who said “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
Intimacy builds trust. David spent time seeking God, knew Him and trusted Him for safety. And it is no different for a Christian today. The time spent in God’s word, studying the Bible and prayer will build up the confidence in you that God will provide. That God will protect. And that God will redeem. And in the midst of the battle, He will give you the greatest security.
And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.
What a testimony. To be in the midst of despair and warfare with those around you and yet still offer songs of worship and praises to God. When you have faith in Jesus Christ, trust Him to protect you and know that seeking Him and the eternal riches of Heaven can never leave you, you can always give praise. Truly God has lifted your head above your enemies, who are only acting out of their carnal nature and have no concern for their own souls. They attack you at their own peril and cannot even see their continued rebellion just moves them farther from what they need the most. And despite their onslaught, you still worship God. At this point the battle, whatever it may be has already been won.
Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me.
But as one battle is won, another one will come soon enough. And Christians must never forget to continue to seek God, in both good times and bad. Store up “ammunition” through regular worship, Bible study and time with God. Jesus commands us to seek “daily bread” to make sure we keep coming back to our source of life and strength. When your enemies have stumbled, do not mock them or gloat. Give God thanks and continue to work on building your knowledge of Him.
So with the Creator of the Universe, Sovereign God and ruler of the Earth on your side, what beloved, are you afraid of? Who is there in this world that you should fear? With Jesus Christ, The Light of Salvation, preserving your soul eternally, the answer is simple: fear no man. Trust God and seek Him. And He will protect you forever.
