The Ineffable Christian Mystery of the Cloud of Unknowing: (Video)
I have strugged with how to introduce my Evangelical Christian brothers and sisters to contemplative prayer and the life that goes with it. Contemplative spirituality represents a rich and unique depth in ones Christian life. The definitive book on this practice in modern times is “The Cloud of Unknowing”:
“The Cloud of Unknowing (Middle English: The Cloude of Unknowyng) is an anonymous work of Christian mysticism written in Middle English in the latter half of the 14th century. The text is a spiritual guide oncontemplative prayer in the late Middle Ages.
“The underlying message of this work suggests that the way to know God is to abandon consideration of God’s particular activities and attributes, and be courageous enough to surrender one’s mind and ego to the realm of “unknowing,” at which point, one may begin to glimpse the nature of God.”"
The problem with the “Cloud” is that it won’t make sense to anyone that has not had Spiritual training in Contemplative Prayer”. So let me give a few takeaways here:
Contemplative prayer is NOT emptying your mind to nothing…it’s stilling the mind and focusing on God!
“Examples of this apophatic theology include God’s appearance to Moses in the Burning Bush; the ineffableName of God (יהוה); and the prophet Elijah‘s theophany, where God reveals Himself in a “still, small voice” (). St. Paul‘s reference to the “Unknown God” in the Acts of the Apostles is sometimes pointed to as an apophatic statement.”
“In negative theology, it is accepted that experience of the Divine is ineffable, an experience of the holy that can only be recognized or remembered abstractly. That is, human beings cannot describe in words the essence of the perfect good that is unique to the individual, nor can they define the Divine, in its immense complexity, related to the entire field of reality. “
Think of knowing God for what you cannot know instead of an aslpect of what he is.

A cloud of unknowing?
How can you know anything when “christanity” is all made up?
Study “Harry Potter”, you will be happier with no violence!
Thought there was plenty of violence in Harry Potter. But point taken.
The bible is very much a fairy story for unevolved primitives who need bludgeoning over the head with a large book of gibberish to make them behave like humane beings, thus defusing their their primitive barbaric natures. Personally think if people don’t know the difference between right and wrong, it’s empathy they lack, not religion, hence the religious must be unevolved primitives.
““The underlying message of this work suggests that the way to know God is to abandon consideration of God’s particular activities and attributes, and be courageous enough to surrender one’s mind and ego to the realm of “unknowing,” at which point, one may begin to glimpse the nature of God.””
How very Buddhist of him. It is a Buddhist meditation practice to empty ones mind of thought to gain a glimpse into ones subconscious awareness.
How does focusing on Jesus or God of the Old and New testament equate to Buddhism?
What is it you didn’t understand about “…and be courageous enough to surrender one’s mind and ego to the realm of “unknowing,…”
If you really don’t get it, then if one is “unknowing”, one isn’t thinking about anything, let alone the biblical God or Jesus. “… abandon consideration of God’s particular activities and attributes …” = an empty mind, not “… focusing on Jesus or God …”
