Passover, The Crucifixion, & the Lord's Day; or Did Constantine Change the Day of Worship?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

There is some confusion regarding the day that Jesus was crucified during the Passover week, and the actual day He was resurrected.  The confusion is a matter of a language barrier between English perception and the Greek of the New Testament which was customarily understood in the first century A.D.    We need to study very carefully how words were used 2,000 years ago, instead of assuming that a casual reading of the scriptures in English translates perfectly.

The Passover feast was celebrated beginning on 14 Nisan of the Jewish calendar (our April), which was the evening before the feast of unleavened bread.  That year, when Jesus was crucified, 14 Nisan was on a Thursday.  The lambs for private celebration at the homes of each family were killed and prepared on 14 Nisan, Thursday.   Then, the lambs for the public altar were killed the following day, 15th Nisan, which fell on Friday that year, on Preparation day.  In the Greek, “paraskeue”.

Friday was always called Preparation Day, “paraskeue”, as it was the day before the Sabbath.  In fact that term, “paraskeue”, is still being used today in the Mediterranean areas to mean Friday.  So Preparation day of Passover as is stated in John 19:14 is the Friday of the week of Passover celebration.

“ and it was the preparation of the passover, and as it were the sixth hour, and he saith to the Jews, `Lo, your king!’ “  John 19:14, Young’s.   or,

“And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!”  John 19:14, KJV

In English where adjectives and descriptive words are used in front of the nouns, we might think this means the preparation before the passover.   But look at in the NIV.    It translated better here.  (All bold emp. is mine.)

“ It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon. “Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews.”  and also from the RSV,  Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”

The meaning here is easier to see.  Preparation day – Friday – of the Passover week.  And is confirmed by verse 31, ” Since it was the day of Preparation, in order to prevent the bodies from remaining on the cross on the sabbath (for that sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away”  (RSV)

As the Jews counted the sunrise to sunset, approximately 6 am to 6 pm, as the day time hours, and sunset to sunset as the full day, then 15th of Nisan, or that Friday began at sunset on the Thursday evening that had been 14 Nisan.  You have to think with a Jewish clock when relating hours of the day that are recorded in the scriptures.  So 6th hour of the “day” was the same as our “noon”.

Jesus was crucified on Friday, and that is confirmed by Mark 15:42, Matt. 27:62; and Luke 23:54.

Mark 15:42, “And now evening having come, seeing it was the preparation, that is, the fore-sabbath, (Young’s).  The fore-sabbath was Friday.  And again,  “ It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached,” ( NIV), and once more, “And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,“  (KJV).

The feast of unleavened bread would last for 7 days, which were frequently referred together as the Passover.  The first Passover meal occurred  on the evening of 14 Nisan, which was a Thursday that year. But, the meals taken throughout the next 7 days were also called Passover meals.

So, Jesus was arrested after having taken the Passover meal with the disciples on Thursday evening, which turned into 15 Nisan after sunset, the Jewish Preparation day, or our Friday.  He was crucified at about the sixth hour (noon, our time) and died about 3 hours later (3 pm our time) on 15 Nisan, the same day that the lambs were slain for the public sacrifice of the Passover for all of the people.  He was the Passover Lamb, the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world for all people.  (Rev. 13:8)

Jesus was resurrected on Sunday, on day 3 after the crucifixion.  It was not a full 72 hours.  It was the morning of day 3.  Sunset of 15 Nisan to sunset of 16 Nisan, past the sunrise on 17 Nisan, which was our Sunday, the Lord’s Day.  Shown clearly in Mark 16:1,2 -

”1And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.” (KJV)

1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Mag′dalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salo′me, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen”  (RSV).

1When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb”  (NIV)

We have called Sunday the Lord’s Day after the tradition of the Apostles.  The Apostles were given the authority to bind and loose, that is set and establish patterns and practices for the church of the Lord.  Paul instructs the Christians at Corinth to do the same as he instructed those at Galatia, to lay by in store on the first day of the week.  (1Cor 16:1-2).  The implication is that they would take up the collection when they met for worship on the Lord’s Day, Sunday.

It is recorded in Acts 20:7 that the disciples met on the first day of the week to break bread in remembrance of Christ’s death.  It is a memorial, a remembrance.  And, unlike the Catholics who have turned the remembrance into a ceremonial rite they call the Eucharist, it is not demanded that it be done every first day of the week.  It is just customary as that is what the disciples did.

Paul routinely went to the non-Christian Jews where they gathered at their synagogues on their Sabbath days in order to teach so that he could reach out to those lost souls, and spread the gospel.  He was still working under God’s command to preach the gospel throughout the lands.  Christians followed the disciples’ practice of breaking the bread, and meeting on the first day of the week in celebration of their new life in Christ.

Ignatius noted in a letter believed to be written around 110 A.D. that Christians were no longer observing the Sabbath, but were meeting on the first day of the week, on the Lord’s Day.  Justin Martyr mentioned in his First Apology, written approx. 150 A.D. that Christians were gathering on the first day of the week to read the letters of the Apostles, and to eat the bread and drink the wine.  These were comments recording existing Christian observances and patterns.  They were not commands of the Roman Catholic Church.

However, the Roman Catholic Church under Constantine added to the confusion in their Nicaea Council held 325 A.D.   Canon 20 issued at the Council of Nicaea discussed the practice of kneeling while praying on the Lord’s Day.

“Forasmuch as there are certain persons who kneel on the Lord’s Day and in the days of Pentecost, therefore, to the intent that all things may be uniformly observed everywhere (in every parish), it seems good to the holy Synod that prayer be made to God standing.”

But, In spite of what some claim, I don’t find any command by the Catholic Church to change the day of worship from Saturday to Sunday.  What I do find is that the sun-god idolater, Constantine, renamed the days.

” However, Constantine was willing to allow his favored pagan deity to be called Jesus — giving a Christian veneer to his idol-worship, as we shall see below. To further cement this, as Constantine clearly wanted his Sun-God worshipped under the name of Jesus, Constantine at Nicea exalted Jesus’s nature from Son of Man with Divinity abiding into an independent-mind who is God the son of a Father who was also God just as Sol Invictus was portrayed. Constantine also transformed the sabbath rest of Christians from Sabbath to Sun-day — the day of worship of Sol Invictus – the day of the Invincible Sun. It was not to honor the Lord’s Day, but to honor Sol Invictus on his day of Sun-day because in Constantine’s pagan beliefs Jesus was the Sun-god Baal aka Sol Invictus.”   further…

“This was also the first use of a seven-day week in the Roman calendar. (Journal of Calendar Reform (September 1953) at 128 fn.) The first day of the week, and most important, was Sun-Day in honor of Sol Invictus/Baal. The six other days were all names of planets. The seventh day of the week – called Saturday (not Sabbath-day) — represented the planet Saturn which is furthest from the Sun and likewise on the calendar was day seven — the furthest day from Sun-Day — day one. (Arthur Weigall, Paganism in our Christianity (Kessinger, 2003)

The pagan names of the seven days aimed to erase Sabbath and the Lord’s Day by Constantine. They were resisted by most of the Western world. For example, in Western European romance languages, Sabbath is still the name for Saturn’s Day which Constantine tried to impose instead as its name. Also, in the same nations, Sun-Day is typically still called “The Lord’s Day.” A strenuous battle must have been going on by people refusing to use pagan names in place of Sabbath & the Lord’s Day……… Only England firmly paganized its language to describe Sabbath now as Satur-Day; it also accepted Sun-Day in place of the Lord’s Day.”

 Source: http://www.jesuswordsonly.com/recommendedreading/239-council-of-nicea-of-325-ad.html

So, Constantine changed “Sabbath” to “Saturday”, and “The Lord’s Day” to “Sunday”.  The Lord’s Day was the day on which the Christians of the first century A.D. gathered, and was the day after the Jewish Sabbath, the day Jesus was resurrected.  The Christians were following the Apostles’ example to meet and worship on the Lord’s Day, to break the bread and drink the wine in a memorial remembrance of His resurrection.  Just because Constantine decided to call that day “Sun-day” after his idol beliefs does not change the day on which our Savior rose.  It just happens to be that the Lord’s Day is now called Sunday by most people.

We still know from the scriptures that the day of Preparation, what we now call a Friday, was the day before the Sabbath, and was the day Jesus was crucified; and, that he rose on the morning of the 3rd day, which is what we now call Sunday.  It is probably better to call it the Lord’s Day as the Christians did so long ago, and as is still used by many today.

Col 2:14-16, “14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.  16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:”  (KJV)

2Cor 3:3-13, Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.  And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward:  Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;  Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.  But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:  How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?  For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.  10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth.  11 For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious12 Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech:  13 And not as Moses, which put a veil over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:  14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.”  (KJV)

Keeping the Sabbath was a part of the old law which passed away at the Cross.  We are no longer under the old law, but the new covenant of the spirit brought by the living stone, Christ.  We remember His death, burial, and resurrection as we worship Him each first day of the week, each Lord’s Day, just as the first century Christians did.

In Genesis 1: 5 it states the light HE called the day (Yom) and the darkness He called the Night

Christ rose on the third day, the third period of Light, if you read the Matthew, Mark, Luke and John carefully you will find when the women arrived at the tomb before sunrise –He was not there! the Stone had been rolled away before sunrise.

Thus by your estimate Christ rose in the dead of night.

      Friday – day

      Sabbath – day

There is no 3rd day in your calculations – so Christ did not rise on the 3rd day according to you

the 14th of Nisan is also called the preparation day for the Passover meal.

      Try this:

At Mid Week, our Wednesday – the fourth day of the week, the 14th of Nisan fell.

Christ was hung on the stake (stauros) about noon.

Christ died at the 9th hour our 3 PM

Christ was placed in the tomb moments before the end of the 12 hour –sundown.

God’s day begin and ends at sunset thus at sunset on Wednesday according to God Thursday or the 5th day of the week began.

Thursday night – 1st night — we account this as Wednesday night
      Thursday day – 1st day

      Friday night – 2nd night
      Friday day — 2nd day

      Sabbath night – 3rd night
      Sabbath day – 3rd DAY

Christ was in the tomb 3 Days and 3 nights , the ONLY sign given that HE is the SON of GOD.

Christ rose moments before sunset on the Sabbath Day THE DAY CHRIST IS LORD OF.

Remember also Christ was to be cut off at midweek

There is confusion over John 13, “Now, before the feast of the passover…” that throws many of us off. Did you read the alternate source provided? It goes through and dispels that confusion. Also, the one provided at Apologetics Press explains it well.

He died on Friday and rose on the 1st day.
      http://www.wednesdaycrucifixion.com/

Anchor point #1: Jesus died at 3pm and was buried on the preparation day (the day before the Sabbath) before sunset, which would begin the Sabbath day.
Anchor point #2: The seventh-day Saturday Sabbath was the day after the crucifixion, and we know this because the women rested that day according to the fourth commandment of God. Therefore, the crucifixion had to have occurred on a Friday.

Btw Daniel gives us the exact year in which He was crucified.

Explain how the women could see where Christ was laid in the tomb then run back to town on foot, buy spice etc from booths “” that were closed “”" because that night began the First Holy HIGH Sabbath of the Days of unleavened Bread when no work is allow and the Passover meal of the lamb was just about to begin?

AND then go back home and prepare the spices all in 20 minutes before the High Day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread began at sundown?

        Ps;
that time frame only allows Joseph less than 2 hours and 40 minutes to see Christ dead on the stake walk to Pilate and beg His body Go back and take Christ down – take Him to a home where they could clean Him up and wrap Him up then take Him to the tomb and roll the stone over the hole. Jerusalem is not small nor flat.

If Christ was placed in the tomb even 20 minutes before sundown the above is impossible and do you both not understand how the Holy Feasts of God are ordered and kept?

I have been keeping the 7th Day Sabbath and the 7 Holy Feasts of God including the Passover since 1969 and if you had been doing so you would not be espousing what you are!

and as I stated above a day as used in the Word is not 24 hours — if it were then why did Christ fast for 40 days AND 40 nights, and why did He state He would be IN THE HEART of the earth for 3 days AND 3 nights and why was Jonas 3 days and 3 nights in the fish?

      The Manna A Prophecy

For even more evidence that the commonly accepted chronology is correct, one must really understand the principle of type and antitype. Jesus drew this parallel between Himself and manna:

John 6:31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
John 6:32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
John 6:33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
John 6:48 I am that bread of life.
John 6:49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
John 6:50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.
John 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

John 6:58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

Just as the manna did not spoil on the Sabbath day (Exo. 16:23-26), the body of Jesus did not see corruption as He rested that day in the tomb (Psa. 16:10, Acts 2:27, 31). The symbolism of the manna specifically prophesies that Jesus would spend the seventh day Sabbath, Saturday, at rest in the tomb in an incorrupt state, because His body was without sin. This is why unleavened bread is the only bread used during Passover week, because it represented the incorrupt body of Jesus. If Jesus had been crucified on Wednesday, that would have been the day the extra manna would have occurred, and it would have not spoiled for the subsequent multiple days in the tomb, for which there would be no new manna provided. However, the typology of the manna clearly does not allow that scenario.

The sequence of days to be observed for Passover was set down in scripture as the “type”. This sequence was symbolic of what was to come when the crucifixion of the Lamb of God actually took place, which is the “antitype”. So the type and antitype must match precisely:

14 Nisan, the Lord’s Passover is the type of the crucifixion day.
15 Nisan, 1st day of Unleavened Bread, is the second day.
16 Nisan, Firstfruits, is a type of the resurrection, and the third day

      Christ Our Passover

You may be wondering how these facts relate to the time of Christ’s death and resurrection. Here is where the beauty of the Bible reveals itself. Jesus was the One to whom all those types and ceremonies pointed. He was the true Passover Lamb. That is why John cried out, “Behold the Lamb of God!” John 1:36. Paul showed how Jesus fulfilled the Passover: “For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, … but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.” 1 Corinthians 5:7, 8.

This is exactly why Jesus died on the fourteenth of Nisan. He did it to fulfill the Scriptures. Paul declared that “Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures.” 1 Corinthians 15:3. He had to die on the same day that the Passover lamb died in order to meet the prophetic type and to establish His identity as the true Passover Lamb.

But just as surely as Jesus died on a certain day according to the Scriptures, He also “rose again the third day, according to the scriptures.” 1 Corinthians 15:4. He not only was our Passover, but He was also the firstfruits! Paul ties it specifically to the resurrection: “But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.” 1 Corinthians 15:20. Again in verse 23, “But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.”

No wonder, then, that Paul wrote so confidently about the resurrection on the third day according to the Scriptures. Christ rose from the dead as the firstfruits of those that slept. He was the antitype of the wave sheaf, and His resurrection took place on the very day that the wave sheaf was to be presented before the Lord.

We can now understand why Jesus and His followers used the expression “third day” more than any other to describe the resurrection. Prophecy had decreed hundreds of years earlier that He would be the fulfillment of the types and shadows surrounding the Passover observance. As the firstfruits, it was essential for Christ to be “harvested” and “presented” before the Lord “on the morrow after the sabbath.” In the year of the crucifixion the Passover sabbath coincided with the weekly Sabbath, making it “a high day.” John 19:31. It was the next day after that Sabbath that Jesus arose from the grave – on Sunday.

When Mary saw Him in the garden after His resurrection, Jesus said, “Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.” John 20:17. Why did Jesus bid Mary not to hold Him or delay Him (as the Greek text implies)? Because He had to ascend that same day to present Himself before the Father as the firstfruits from the dead.

The biblical proof of those three successive days during Passover week completely shatters the Wednesday crucifixion theory. He had to die on Friday to fulfill the Scriptures concerning His death as the Passover lamb. He had to be resurrected on the third day after His death to meet the scriptural type of the firstfruits. Only three days can be involved in the time sequence, or the Word of God is broken.

In the light of this tremendous, undeniable evidence of the Word of God, we can positively affirm that Jesus was not, and could not have been, resurrected on the Sabbath. Neither could He have been crucified on a Wednesday.

The issues here are much deeper than most people realize. Had Christ not fulfilled every single Old Testament type and shadow pointing forward to His atoning death and resurrection, He would be an imposter and fraud. It was absolutely essential that every prophecy of the Messiah should be fulfilled in His life and death. In a special sense, the prefiguring of His victory over the grave was the capstone of hope for both Old and New Testament believers. Just as the sheaf of firstfruit grain held the promise and assurance of abundant harvest, even so our blessed Lord’s glorious resurrection is the guarantee of a mighty harvest in the resurrection soon to take place. “Because I live, ye shall live also.” John 14:19.

Amminadab, your information is wonderful to have. Thank you. However, I am confused by “This is exactly why Jesus died on the fourteenth of Nisan.” My studies show that he died on Friday, 15 Nisan, as Friday was the public sacrifice of the lambs for passover. The Thursday evening meal was the family, or private passover meal. Wasn’t 14 Nisan the Thursday till sunset, when it became 15 Nisan? So, wouldn’t that make Firday, 15 Nisan until sunset, when it turned to the Sabbath, or 16 Nisan?

Exo 12:18 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even.

Lev 23:5 In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the Lord’s passover.
Lev 23:6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread.

2 Chr 35:1 Moreover Josiah kept a passover unto the LORD in Jerusalem: and they killed the passover on the fourteenth day of the first month.

16th of Nisan/Abib (The day of first fruits, Resurrection day)
Sunday, which began at sunset – our Saturday night.
Not a Sabbath day in type or antitype.

The resurrection takes place at some time after the beginning of the day (at sunset) but before the morning sunrise. Just exactly when after sunset the resurrection took place is uncertain, but that it happened on what we today call Sunday is really quite clear as Luke 24 showed, but here is more evidence-

1 Cor 15:20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the Firstfruits of them that slept.

So just how does this verse relate?-

Lev 23:10 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then ye shall bring a sheaf of the Firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest:
Lev 23:11 And he shall wave the sheaf before the LORD, to be accepted for you: on the morrow after the sabbath the priest shall wave it.

The wave sheaf represented the first fruits of the resurrection, the Messiah (1 Cor 15:20), and the day it was presented was the day AFTER the Sabbath as Lev 23:11 just proved. (The Sabbath meant here is 15 Nisan/Abib, the first day of Unleavened Bread [Lev 23:6-7]). Clearly then, since the first day of Unleavened Bread coincided with the Seventh day Sabbath that year, the resurrection of Jesus (the first fruits), happened on 16 Nisan/Abib the day AFTER the double or high Sabbath, on the first day of the week, Sunday. (Because it represents the resurrection, the day of Firstfruits must clearly occur on the third day after the crucifixion [14 Nisan], to fulfill scripture.)

          • CAPTAIN CHAOS!!

She gets that, Amminadab. But she doesn’t think Messiah’s Sacrifice actually coincided with the Passover on the fourteenth. She thinks Messiah ATE the Passover on the fourteenth with His Disciples (which He didn’t) and then was Sacrificed the following day — on the first day of Unleavened Bread.

Wording in the translated Gospel accounts of that week cause a bit of confusion, but the matter is resolved by examining everything as a unit, as it pertains to the events of those few days.

Messiah took His last meal with the Disciples as the Passover drew nigh. He did not eat the Passover with them on the fourteenth. This can be demonstrated many ways — but among the ways is this:

Look at the Greek word for the bread Messiah broke during that meal. That bread was not unleavened bread. Were it a Passover meal, the ordinance demands unleavened bread to be the only bread in sight.

According to the best available astronomical information, Nisan (Abib) 14 fell on Friday, April 27, in A. D. 31, the year of the crucifixion.” Raymond F. Cottrell, in R&H June 9, 1955.

            • CAPTAIN CHAOS!!

That’s the sort of thing a fella might expect to find if he was looking for a date according to the rabbi’s rules. But the calendar of the rabbis has nothing to do with the ‘Calendar’ of the Most High (not that His system can even rightly be called a ‘calendar’). There is never a thirteenth month and the months are never determined by any phase of the Moon in God’s system. That is ever. No exceptions.

Lunar calendars are a Babylonian innovation. All of them.

Tell me if you see a problem here…

              13. Araḫ Makaruša Addari ~ Araḫ Ve-Adār

I am asking YOU Amminadab… Do you think this is really something the Most High has put His approval to? Do you think He agrees with any of this? Do you think He would EVER consent to having His own system for marking time tagged by this Babylonian Pagan idolatry?

You cannot seriously be confused about this issue. Things don’t get any simpler for us when it comes to making right decisions about who or what is authentic, according to the Word. Babylonian days begin and end in darkness. Babylonian months begin and end in darkness. Babylonian years begin and end in darkness.

The Babylonian calendar – all versions of it – are the work of our Enemy.

Passover – 14 Nisan, is the type of the crucifixion day and occurs before a seventh day Sabbath.
The day following the crucifixion is not only a seventh day Sabbath, but also the beginning of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, 15 Nisan, making that Sabbath a “high” double Sabbath.
16 Nisan, the day of Firstfruits, a clear type of the resurrection day, occurs after a sabbath day, but is not itself a Sabbath day!
          http://biblelight.net/pasover.htm#

    • CAPTAIN CHAOS!!

“The meaning here is easier to see. Preparation day – Friday – of the Passover week.”

You need a confirming witness for preparation in connection with the Seventh Day Sabbath. In Scripture, we find ‘preparation’ in reference only to the Passover day. The fourteenth day of the first month is the preparation day. That is the day being referred to in the verses you quote. It is true that the fourteenth day was the day prior to the Seventh Day Sabbath on that particular ‘week’, but the concurrence of Passover with the day prior to the Seventh Day Sabbath should not be taken to mean that all ‘Sixth Days’ are preparation days. In the biblical sense of the term, they are not; no matter what the modern rabbis teach.

“…And is confirmed by verse 31, ” Since it was the day of Preparation, in order to prevent the bodies from remaining on the cross on the sabbath (for that sabbath was a high day)…”

The First Day of Unleavened Bread, which was the day following Messiah’s crucifixion, coincided with the Seventh Day Sabbath that year. That is what made the Sabbath ‘a high Sabbath.’ We know Messiah died on the fourteenth day of the first month. We know He rested on the Seventh Day. The Seventh Day Sabbath – which was the following day (the fifteenth) – was the first day of Unleavened Bread. We know Messiah was raised on the Eighth Day.

“As the Jews counted the sunrise to sunset, approximately 6 am to 6 pm, as the day time hours, and sunset to sunset as the full day…”

Modern day ‘Jewish’ rabbis may count time in this fashion, but Scripture makes it clear – the day begins when the day begins; and it ends when it ends. Darkness has no part of the Day. Truthseeker above rightly draws attention to the Book of Genesis, wherein God creates a distinction (a division) between light and darkness. The rabbis seek to erase this boundary, in much the same manner as they seek to erase all boundaries placed by the Most High. In the opening chapter of Genesis: There was the day’s work done. Then there came evening. Then there came morning. And that constituted the first day. Night had no part in it. The evening and the morning are the mixing of light and darkness. The evening and the morning are not part of the day and they are not part of the night. The evening and the morning are the boundaries between light and darkness.

“Jesus was crucified on Friday, and that is confirmed by Mark 15:42, Matt. 27:62; and Luke 23:54.”

Possible but unlikely. There is one chance in seven that the day Messiah died corresponded with what would become our modern Roman ‘Friday.’ The Calendar of Scripture does not synch up with modern Pagan calendars. The Seventh Day Sabbath of the Biblical Calendar falls on the same day as our modern ‘Saturday’ for a period of one year, every seventh year.

“The first Passover meal occurred on the evening of 14 Nisan, which was a Thursday that year.”

If the Passover fell on a ‘Thursday’ of that year, then how is it you say Messiah died on ‘Friday’? Messiah died on the Passover, according to a correct observance of the Biblical Calendar. Passover is on the fourteenth day of the first month. Your assumption that a pre-Passover meal was actually a Passover meal, comes from mistranslated and misunderstood verses in the Gospels.

“So, Jesus was arrested after having taken the Passover meal…”

That is not what the Word teaches:

      John 13

      1. Now BEFORE the feast of the Passover…

      2. And supper having ended…

You’re drawing erroneous conclusions if you confound the feast of the Passover in verse one with the supper that ended in verse two. Verse one makes it clear that the events described happened ‘before’ the feast of the Passover.

“He was crucified at about the sixth hour (noon, our time) and died about 3 hours later (3 pm our time) on 15 Nisan…”

You believe the true Calendar of our Creator would have months named after Pagan deities? Think again. There are verses in Scripture which show the Israelites ascribing Pagan deity names to their months. Don’t be fooled by their mistake. And pay close attention to where the names came from and where the Israelites had been prior to their adopting such names. Scriptural Instructions does not include names for the months. The first month is the month OF ‘aviv’ barley; it is not the Month Aviv.

Messiah died on the fourteenth – not the fifteenth. Messiah IS our Passover Lamb. He is the Lamb. He died as a fulfillment of the sacrifice of the Passover Lamb. He did not die on the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. He died on the Passover.

“We have called Sunday the Lord’s Day after the tradition of the Apostles.”

The Apostles referred to the Eighth Day as the Day of the Lord. This is not ‘Sunday.’ Like ‘Saturday’, ‘Sunday’ is a coincidence for only one year in seven. ‘Sunday’ has no meaning in comparison with the Eighth Day.

“The implication is that they would take up the collection when they met for worship on the Lord’s Day, Sunday.”

Sounds like typical Roman Rite teaching. The ‘implication’ is that Seventh Day Sabbath observance was done away based on something Paul sort of said. So we re-write the Words of the Most High because we think we heard Paul say something he didn’t really say. Will there be anyone excused for this sort of thinking in the day when we are called to account for ourselves?

“It is just customary as that is what the disciples did.”

Whatever the disciples did or did not do, was not instead of what they were commanded to do.

“So, Constantine changed “Sabbath” to “Saturday”, and “The Lord’s Day” to “Sunday”.”

We have Pope Gregory to thank for our modern changes. Not Constantine.

“Keeping the Sabbath was a part of the old law which passed away at the Cross.”

This lie is based again on something Paul sort of said? And since Paul never said what you (and most of Christendom) accuse him of having said, it won’t be Paul explaining himself In That Day. It will be everyone who read into what Paul wrote. The Almighty said He changes not. He said His statutes and ordinance change not either. Then comes a man, who doesn’t even actually SAY THE WORDS you ascribe to him, and you throw away the Commandments from on High in favor of what a man didn’t even really say? Where is the wisdom in that?

Many of the people that declare Jesus died on Wednesday fail to realize one simple reality of the whole matter. This new fact that happen to “come to me” some days ago puts to bed every obstacle regarding this false doctrine with childlike ease. Even the feast day keeper that declares a “high Sabbath” to be during the middle of the week is put to rest here. Two simple facts can be used to thwart the entire Wednesday cruci-fiction theory.

Ask them.. “Since you declare a High Sabbath can be held on a Thursday by declaring Jesus died on Wednesday, please explain this passage…”

Luke 23:55-56, “And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid. And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.”

Luke 24:1-3, “Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.”

Those that preach a Wednesday crucifixion never mention the simple facts represented here. If in fact they are correct in assuming that the day after Jesus died, which they claim to be a Thursday, was actually a HIGH Sabbath, I ask, why did the women that “…rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.” wait all the way until, “…the first day of the week, very early in the morning, (before) they came unto the sepulchre”? If it was truly a High Sabbath on Thursday, the day after that High Sabbath, would be a Friday. This means it would have been 100% acceptable for the women to go to the tomb where Jesus was laid to anoint His body that day. But, the Bible says they didn’t return until, “…the first day of the week.” Why? Because they “…rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.” Only the 7th day Sabbath is mentioned in the Commandments. Feast days are not. This proves beyond doubt that Jesus died on Friday. The women rested on the High Sabbath that is truly only defined by having an annual sabbath (feast day) fall on a 7th day weekly Sabbath. Ask any Orthodox Jew and he will agree.

If you believe Jesus died on a Wednesday, your Bible contradicts your faith by the way the women didn’t return to His tomb on Friday, but waited till Sunday to anoint His body. If you believe He died on Friday, your Bible coincides with your faith perfectly.

      One more thing to notice…

Matthew 16:21, “From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.”

Notice how Jesus explains the schedule of events. He states plainly that when He goes to Jerusalem He will suffer at the hands of the elder, be killed and then raised the third day. He doesn’t say “three days later” does He? The sentence is structured to include His resurrection along with the His ill handling and killing. Had He meant to say He would be in the grave 3 literal days, one would think He would have stated as such here.

        ammindaba, gina

As all punctuation in the Bible is added by man — here is how the scripture could be reads

        Luke 23:55-56,
“And the women also which came with him from Galilee followed after and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.

        And they returned. (period)

And prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.”

At sundown ending the 14th the Stone was rolled in place, the women went home to eat the Passover lamb as this night began the Feast of Unleavened Bread. This Feast is always the 15th, a High Day.

Then on the 16th, a non holy day, they bought spices and prepared them and rested on the “Sabbath as commanded” the Sabbath would be the 17th.

If the High Feast day was on the 15th then the 16th was the 6th day of the week and the following day would be the Sabbath, the 7th.

I believe this just states Christ was not in the tomb very early on the first day of the week. and other scriptures state they got there before the sun began to rise.

Do you really believe God the Father resurrected His Son in darkness? There is not one scripture that will clearly state that Christ was resurrected from the dead on the first day of the week.

I hope you are acquainted with the verse in which Christ says ‘are there not 12 hours in a day”

Christ was resurrected on the 3rd Day the 3rd period of Light or He can not be your savior.

Lets see Friday day and Sabbath day — that is only two and you can not count your Thursday as He was placed in the tomb moments before sunset and you can’t count sunday because He was out of the tomb before sunrise.

Question: in every discussion I have had with folks they ALL ignore and refused to acknowledge the words of Jesus Christ, Oh they all acknowledge every other scripture —but

39 “And there shall no sign be given to it but the sign of the prophet Jonas,”

40 “For as Jonas was 3 days and 3 nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of Man -BE- 3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth.”

All every single one will ignore the words of Christ?? I wonder why?

        • CAPTAIN CHAOS!!

          Truthseeker,

Here’s a little of the Word re any sundown beginning of the day:

          John 20:1

The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulcher…

And in verse 19 we have:

Then the same day at even, being the first day of the week…

Now a literal rendering of John 20:1 would have it:

…Mary the Magdalene is coming morning of darkness still being…

          http://www.scripture4all.org/OnlineInterlinear/Greek_Index.htm

And then later on that evening, in verse 20, it is still the same day.

That leaves no room for a sundown to sundown reckoning of time, according to Scripture. It was the same day from the morning and into the evening, according to John chapter 20.

          • Truthseeker

            Walter

            I see no conflict:

The first day of the week began at sundown, night time passed and as morning came while it was yet dark —

then in verse 19, on the same day at even.

my studies have proven to me that morning is sunrise till noon and even or evening is noon until sunset. The night is the darkness.

3 days and 3 nights. 3 light periods and 3 dark periods

Genesis 1: 5 the morning and the evening were the first DAY, YOM, the 12 hours of light.

the morning is the first 6 hours and the afternoon is the last 6 hours.

I can not find any scripture where it is clear that a day is longer then 12 hours.

Yes I fully know that this word ‘even’ or ‘evening’ has and is causing many fights even in my small flock it is a stumbling stone.

I have spent much time on this and it clears up much for me.

For instance: On the 14th at even the P/O is killed, I can not believe the Passover is killed at sunset, that would mean some would have to eat the lamb at midnight if they slaughtered 500 or a 1000 lambs.

And to further the point: Christ was hung on the stake around noon, died around the 9th hour and was in the tomb before the 12th hour ended.
Christ sacrifice took the entire evening, 6 hours.

          • CAPTAIN CHAOS!!

“…my studies have proven to me that morning is sunrise till noon and even or evening is noon until sunset.”

How do you reckon that with this:

            Genesis 1:5

And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night.

            Or…

            Young’s Literal Translation (same verse)

…and God calleth to the light `Day’, and to the darkness He hath called `Night’; and there is an evening, and there is a morning — day one.

Or again the literal interpretation from Scripture for All

…and he is becoming evening and he is becoming morning; Day One.

God divided the light from the darkness.

And the *evening and the **morning were the first day.

*Evening = H6153 ערב ‛ereb From H6150; dusk: – + day, even (-ing, tide), night.

**Morning = H1242 בּקר bôqer From H1239; properly dawn (as the break of day); generally morning: – (+) day, early, morning, morrow.

            ???

“I can not believe the Passover is killed at sunset…”

It isn’t. Most translations have it – ‘between the evenings.’ Sometimes when we see ‘at the going down of the Sun’ written out in translation, it is the exact same Hebrew phrase which translates everywhere else as ‘between the evenings.’

We don’t know what ‘between the evenings’ means, but we know when Messiah died and Messiah did not die at Sundown. Long studies on the Hebrew idiomatic phrase yield little results.

“Christ was hung on the stake around noon, died around the 9th hour and was in the tomb before the 12th hour ended.”

If there is no actual Sundown to Sundown reckoning in Scripture (which there isn’t) then Messiah would not have to have been in the tomb before the 12th hour’s conclusion. This would also free up a few more hours time while Joseph secured rights and while the Marys collected material. The Sabbath began on the following day.

Even if – incidentally – there was a Sundown to Sundown reckoning (which there wasn’t), there is nothing in Scripture about that particular Sabbath being observed from even to even; that instruction is given only for the Day of Atonement. Therefore, the High Sabbath would have begun the following day anyway, since there is nothing in Scripture about beginning a ‘day’ (which is completely separate from the night) at the beginning of the night.

The rabbis have it backwards and upside down, as usual.

            Inversion.

        • Amminadab

Anchor point #4: Jesus rose from the dead on Sunday, the first day of the week, which was the third day since His trial, death and burial (Luke 24:21).

Luke 24:18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?
Luke 24:19 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:
Luke 24:20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.
Luke 24:21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.

Sunday, as we have seen, actually began at sunset on Saturday evening, and by Jewish reckoning any part of a day is counted as a day. So working backwards:

Sunday, was the third day, the day of the resurrection.
Saturday (Sabbath) was the second day that Christ rested in the tomb.
Friday (Preparation day) was the first day, the day of the crucifixion.

Note that in Luke 24:18 – 21, the events of the three days begin with the arrest and trial of Jesus, not with His burial!

Jesus was crucified on Friday and died at 3 p.m. He rose from the dead somewhere between Saturday after sunset and sunrise on Sunday morning. There is absolutely no way to push the crucifixion back to Wednesday and fit scripture. A Wednesday crucifixion is clearly impossible.

          Three days and Three nights.

Oh, but then what of these apparently troublesome verses, don’t they preclude a Friday crucifixion?-

Mat 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Mat 27:63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, *After three days* I will rise again.

Mark 8:31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and *after three days* rise again.

These verses are appealed to in order to propose a full 72 hours in the grave. They do seem to say a full 3 days and 3 nights don’t they? How can this possibly be reconciled with the traditional chronology? If you believe the Bible cannot contradict itself, then these verses MUST be harmonized with the rest of scripture on the subject. Well, please note the following story in 1 Kings-

          The third day (inclusive reckoning)

1 Ki 12:5 And he said unto them, Depart yet *for three days*, then come again to me. And the people departed.

1 Ki 12:12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam *the third day*, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again *the third day*.

The king tells the people to depart for three days, but they return ON the third day, not on the fourth!! Why? Because the king did not mean to be gone for a full 72 hours. The counting of days was inclusive in nature. The same day that the king told them to leave was the first day. The second day they stayed away, and then they returned the third day, as the king had intended. This is the exactly the same manner of counting used for the resurrection. It is inclusive in nature, with whatever portion of the first and last days being counted as full days.

Just for good measure, this same story is told in 2 Chronicles-

2 Chr 10:5 And he said unto them, Come again unto me *after three days*. And the people departed.

2 Chr 10:12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam *on the third day*, as the king bade, saying, Come again to me *on the third day*.

Note the way this is worded compared to 1 Kings. Come again unto me after three days, depart yet for three days, and Come again to me on the third day, these all mean exactly the same thing, which is NOT a full three days or a full 72 hours.

Here is a similar situation of inclusive reckoning in the book of Esther:

Est 4:16 Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.
Est 4:17 So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.
Est 5:1 Now it came to pass on the third day, that Esther put on her royal apparel, and stood in the inner court of the king’s house, over against the king’s house: and the king sat upon his royal throne in the royal house, over against the gate of the house.

Note that here in Luke 13, the third day clearly means the day after tomorrow, not after 3 full days:

Luke 13:31 The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee.
Luke 13:32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.
Luke 13:33 Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.

So, in light of all the evidence, Matt 12:40, 27:63 and Mark 8:31 do not really mean a full literal three days and nights or 72 hours, since Jesus clearly rose ON the third day. By Jewish understanding, referred to as inclusive reckoning, three days and three nights, and after three days, simply meant the same thing as ON the third day.

Anchor Point #5: Jesus was resurrected ON the third day, not after 72 literal hours.

Not a literal 72 hours??? —- If you read my comment above you will see I question why ALL ignore the words of Christ.

“Are there not 12 hours in a day”

“the only sign given is 3 days and 3 night in the heart of the earth”

Chris must be in the tomb for 3 days and 3 nights or He is not our savior. and there are 12 hours is a day thus just for the 3 days there must be 36 hours and what of the 3 nights????

Mat 17:22 And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:
Mat 17:23 And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.

Mat 26:45 Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Mark 9:31 For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.

Mark 14:41 And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Luke 24:7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

Note that the “things” include Jesus’ betrayal and being put on trial. See also:

              Matt 16:21; Matt 20:18-19;
              Mark 8:31; Mark 10:33-34;
              Luke 9:22; Luke 18:32-33; Luke 24:46.

So the phrase “in the heart of the earth” does not begin with burial in the tomb, as some suppose, but rather with Christ being betrayed into the hands of sinners for trial, on what we would call Thursday night (by Jewish reckoning the early evening hours that began Friday, 14 Nisan, Passover). That was the beginning of the 3 days and 3 nights.
