Does Sexual Liberation Have You In Bondage?

Does Sexual Liberation Have You In Bondage?
by: Kyla McHale

Sexual liberation is historically the beginning of the downfall of any civilization. Once a society begins to focus more on their lustful desires, this makes not only the family unit crumble but causes everything to crumble in the wake of these seismic decisions. Honestly though, let’s focus less on society as a whole, but rather on your individual soul, shall we? Could the societal norms of today be having a devastating effect on all of our souls? Could we be embracing this “freedom” only for it to lead us into spiritual bondage?

Marriage

Many people today believe that ‘marriage is a sham’ or even that marriage isn’t even necessary to be in a committed relationship with someone. When you look deeper into what marriage truly means, however, you might find that today’s idea of marriage is exactly that – an unnecessary sham.

The act of having a ceremony and signing a legal document is completely nonessential for a couple to have a loving, committed relationship. Truly, the ceremony is merely a celebration, and the legal document only benefits governmental taxation and legal representation. So if that is not what signifies marriage, what is?

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. [Genesis 2:24] *emphasis mine

Tying the Knot

Beginning to dive a little deeper, we will see that marriage is not only a physical union but also a spiritual union. According to legal documents in the US and others, marriage is not considered ‘consummated’ until the couple “co-habit together or engage in sexual intercourse”. This is also true from a Scriptural standpoint, as we can clearly see from the story of Jacob with Leah and Rachel.

And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her. [Genesis 29:23]

When we read this portion of Genesis we find that there was no wedding ceremony, there was no real legal document binding them together; there was only the sexual union that then united Jacob to Leah. And certainly, we can see this union is taken very seriously when we consider the fact that Jacob loved Rachel, and was never intending to marry Leah. Jacob was deceived by their father to take Leah, instead, as a wife. Although Jacob was in anguish at this deception, he knew that his soul was now tied to Leah.

Did Jesus say anything regarding the topic?

There isn’t much that can be found straight from the mouth of Our Messiah. He did, however, speak directly with the Samaritan woman at the well. The conversation went like this:

“I have no husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said to her, “You are correct to say that you have no husband. In fact, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have (the man you love now) is not your husband. You have spoken truthfully.”
[John 4:17-18] *emphasis and parentheses mine

As we can see from the passage above, Jesus knew the inner workings of this woman’s life without her ever having to reveal the truth. Being that Jesus was operating in both a fleshly and spiritual form, it would make sense that he knew these things. It is made known to us that this woman had lain with five men, and she was spiritually wed to them. But Jesus mentioned that there was another man whom she loves that she was not married to. Could it be as simple as her not yet having intercourse with this man?

When you look into the Strong’s Concordance of the word ‘not’ in John 4:18, it is clear that it can be used to determine that consummation was not yet made or, in other words, the individual was still a virgin or not yet laid with. Not only does Jesus know all that we have done in our entire lives but he also knows that each person you have had sexual intercourse with is indeed your spouse.

Final thoughts

This realization literally blew my mind. It never once occurred to me that there could be spiritual damage to being with people, I only ever thought about the physical. After I came to this understanding, I recognized that my soul was being pulled in so many directions. I had unwittingly married myself to people and each one was inadvertently guiding my soul in the direction that they were leading their lives; whether I liked it or not I was at the liberty of these men. Could this be the same for you…?

There is no shame in decisions that we had made prior to this understanding. We can only learn from the past and grow for the future. There is freedom in this truth, and we can rest assured knowing that God can sever any unholy ties that we may have made. God is the epitome of forgiveness and mercy; He will cleanse you if you only ask. I found so much freedom once I acknowledged this spiritual bond, and begged God to take this burden from me. Ever since my ties have been severed, my life has been so much easier. My decisions feel less weighted, my vision of life feels less foggy, and it has also been a lot easier for me to love and commit to my true love and TRUE soul mate now. I pray that this information is as freeing for you as it was for me. I pray that you can forgive yourself and allow God the opportunity to bless you with spiritual freedom.

Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. [Hebrews 13:4]

“Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.” [Psalms 25:5]
