Tracing Haile Selassie’s Lineage to King David: History, Faith, and the Solomonic Legacy

Emperor Haile Selassie

For centuries, Ethiopia has stood as one of the world’s most enduring civilizations, carrying a royal tradition that stretches deep into biblical antiquity. At the center of this legacy is Emperor Haile Selassie I, a global icon of African dignity, resistance, and spiritual identity.

According to Ethiopian imperial chronicles and Rastafarian belief, Haile Selassie descends directly from King David of Israel, a lineage that connects Africa to the ancient roots of Judaism and Christianity. Tracing this ancestry is not merely an exercise in genealogy; it is a journey through scripture, history, culture, and the spiritual imagination of millions who see Haile Selassie as the living embodiment of the Davidic promise.

Long before modern borders divided nations, the ancient world was bound together by trade, diplomacy, and shared religious traditions. The biblical story of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba forms the foundation of Ethiopia’s royal genealogy. In the books of 1 Kings and 2 Chronicles, Sheba travels to Jerusalem to test Solomon’s wisdom.

Ethiopian tradition expands this encounter, teaching that their union produced a son named Menelik I, who later returned to Ethiopia carrying the Ark of the Covenant. This narrative, preserved in the Kebra Nagast, is central to Ethiopia’s identity and the legitimacy of its monarchy. It establishes a direct link between Israel’s House of David and Ethiopia’s Solomonic Dynasty.

Haile Selassie, born Tafari Makonnen in 1892, is recognized as the 225th monarch in this ancient line. His coronation titles, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, echo the biblical language associated with David and his descendants. These titles are not symbolic inventions; they reflect Ethiopia’s belief in a continuous royal lineage stretching back nearly 3,000 years.

While modern historians cannot verify every generation in such an extensive genealogy, the overall tradition is historically plausible. Ethiopia maintained a stable monarchy, preserved detailed royal chronicles, and sustained cultural ties with the Near East from antiquity through the Axumite Empire and beyond.

For Rastafarians, Haile Selassie’s lineage is more than historical — it is prophetic. They interpret Revelation 5:5, which speaks of the “Root of David,” as pointing to Selassie’s divine kingship. His survival of assassination attempts, his leadership during the Italian invasion, and his global advocacy for African unity reinforced the belief that he was chosen for a spiritual mission.

To them, Selassie represents the fulfillment of ancient promises, a living connection between Africa and the biblical world, and a symbol of liberation for oppressed people everywhere. Tracing Haile Selassie’s roots to David is therefore a story of intertwined histories: Ethiopia’s royal tradition, Israel’s biblical heritage, and the Rastafarian movement’s spiritual vision.
