How to Keep Your Home Cooler on Hot Days
There are different ways to keep your home cooler, depending on how hot it is, which cooling method you prefer on that day, and how much you’re watching the expenses.
Here are a few suggestions to help you keep your home cooler.
Cooking Outside
Choosing to cook outside with a barbeque setup avoids heating up the kitchen and connected rooms with cooking appliances. It’s a small step but when wishing to avoid heat buildup, every little bit helps.
Take advantage of cooking on a barbeque by working with a list of the best recipes to serve up some delicious meats and vegetables direct from the grill.
Dehumidifier
When living in a hotter climate where it’s humid and sticky, it’s as much the humidity that causes you to sweat more as it is the core temperature on the day.
There are different ways to deal with humidity. Using a dehumidifier in the room that gets occupied the most extracts moisture directly from the air. The effect is a feeling of staying cooler and more comfortable in your own clothes. Dehumidifiers cover the whole apartment or house, but there are also portable units that can be moved between different rooms, as needed.
It’s also a good idea in humid environments to wear looser clothing and stick to natural fabrics like cotton or linen shirts that allow your body to breathe naturally without trapping the heat in.
Air-conditioning
There is no question that using the AC is the quickest way to get the heat down when it’s hot both inside and outside. At times when cracking open a window or using a fan isn’t doing a bit of good because the heat is overwhelming, you will be grateful that you have AC ready to suck the heat right out of the room.
The worst thing is when the AC breaks down right when you need it the most. That’s when a quality ac repair technician is required to get it back up and running fast. The last thing you need is for your AC unit to get stuck in the shop waiting to be repaired for weeks at a time, driving you to despair.
Eco-Friendly Light Bulbs
This might seem like an odd one as we don’t think about light bulbs heating up rooms. However, a bright 100-watt traditional light bulb is able to increase the heat level by a few degrees when it’s on for an hour or longer in a small, self-contained room.
Using eco-friendly light bulbs costs more upfront but they use far less energy for the same level of illumination. They also do not heat up a room in the same way that an incandescent light bulb does.
There are plenty of options for keeping the heat levels down. Ideas like an awning over exterior windows that block the sun but not the outside view are ones that homeowners don’t think about, but they work well. Get creative to make your home more comfortable when the temperature rises outside.
