We are nearly coming to the end of the year and it’s about time you started reviewing what your current goals are and what you have achieved. If you did not start out with any resolutions at the beginning of the year perhaps this is the right time to evaluate what you have achieved during the year. “To be successful you must decide exactly what you want to accomplish, and then resolve to pay the price to get it” -Bunker Hunt. The only thing you have to fear is not giving 100%. There are no limitations to any of our dreams.

I believe that you do not have to wait until the end of the year to write down your goals or resolutions. You can start now and align yourself as the year progresses. If you are living your life without setting goals for your life then, you are living an aimless life, you are simply drifting along. It is very important to have a written down set of goals and work towards achieving them.

I know for a fact; that every reasonable human being has a set of aspirations they would want to achieve. You may not have realised it but even those that do not have written down resolutions have some sort of aspirations. You will agree with me that if you ask a child, what they would like to be when they grow up they will definitely tell you something. Some of the happiest of people I have come across are those that make resolutions that are written down and they are vigorously pursuing them.

resolutions and read them very often. Writing down your resolutions keeps reminding you of what you need to achieve in a specified period. If you are serious about your personal growth you will have written down resolutions that feed into their intended life’s purpose. This also acts as a gauge to your life. You will always make your own assessment to see if you are moving towards achieving your written down resolutions or are drifting away from them and keep yourself in line.

I know for a fact that it takes a lot of discipline to live according to your written down plan. But remember that discipline is a habit that can be learned. Every day comes with its own challenges but, it is also important that we try and fit those daily challenges in to our plans. Everyone including those that are successful have challenges and the difference is that they have learned to be more disciplined by doing that which helps them more to achieve their goals. “Great minds have purpose others have wishes” – Washington Irvin.

Your written down periodical resolutions should feed into your overall intended life’s purpose. You will use your resolutions as a vehicle to drive you towards your life’s bigger picture. I can assure you that you will most likely not achieve all of your resolutions in the specified period that you have set yourself. Don’t worry about that, the most important thing is that you have them written down and this will keep reminding you of them as you review your progress.

Give yourself genuine targets
Your resolutions must be accompanied by genuine measureable targets. It will give you more motivation and encouragement as you achieve each and every resolution your have written down. I know that it is important to challenge ourselves, but these targets should be realistic and achievable. Failure to achieve your targets in a specified period should not be a limiting factor. The most important thing is to learn from your failures and keep on improving until you have achieved your plans.

Your targets could be set for review on a periodical basis e.g. weekly, monthly or quarterly depending on how often you want to monitor your own progress. When setting your targets please ensure that they can be easily measured and assessed by both yourself and an independent person that you have shared them with.

Be honest with yourself when carrying out a self assessment. Remember that only you know yourself better than anyone else. It is important to be honest with yourself before you can be honest with other people.

Reward yourself
The highest reward for a person’s toil is not what they get for it, but what they become by it” – John Rushkin. Life is too short. Always reward yourself for accomplishing your goals. Rewarding yourself should be done only when you have met your set resolutions for that period. This will help to keep you motivated to work extra hard as your mind will be looking forward to the rewards after wards.

Keep your rewards modest so as not to overshadow yourself with instant gratification. Look at the bigger picture of what you want to achieve and keep your mind focused on doing what you have to do to achieve your overall intended life’s purpose. Also keep in mind that you are not in competition with anyone and that success is not a destination but a joyful journey. Personal development and growth is about yourself and not anyone else.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you stay motivated and focused on the bigger picture of your personal development and growth. I have noticed that many of us like to blame our failures on other people. But remember that most of the times we are not forced to make the bad choices and decisions that have lead to failure and destruction.

Conclusion
I therefore, challenge you to review your years achievements whether you have resolutions for the current year or not. The fact that you are not dead means that you must have achieved something even if it is failure. If you have your resolutions written down, it is time you started reviewing them and start thinking about how strong you are going to end the year. It is also time you started thinking about making your next year’s resolutions and have them ready as you start working on them at the turn of the year. Stay blessed and remember to always “Standout tall and be counted”.
