Apple Acquires Chip Maker for $500 Million
Apple has paid $500 million for Anobit, an Israeli company that manufactures flash storage devices, according to the Calcalist Financial Daily, an Israeli newspaper.
According to the newspaper, Apple is also expected to open an R&D facility in Isreal.
Flash storage is used in Apple’s iPod, iPhone and iPad products. The use of flash storage is also becoming prevelent in Apple’s computers, most notibly their MacBook Air which does not include a traditional hard drive at all.
The Prime Minister of Isreal, Benjamin Netanyahu, applauded the deal, posting on Twitter from his official account, ”Welcome to Israel, Apple Inc. on your 1st acquisition here, I’m certain that you’ll benefit from the fruit of the Israeli knowledge.”
