Pinterest – is it worth the effort?

Pinterest definitions

Before we start talking about Pinterest, it is best to define it. Here are some definitions:

• There is a HubSpot e-book entitled The Productivity Handbook – 7 Apps that can change the way you do business. One of the apps covered is Pinterest and they define it as “a social bookmarking site that focuses on images.”
• The Wiki article at Wiki on Pinterest defines it as “ a vision board-styled social photo sharing website.”
• The Pinterest website defines it as “an online pinboard. Organize and share things you love.”
• In the article entitled PINTEREST What the heck is it???, it says this: “Think of Pinterest as a virtual pinboard — a place where you can create collections of things you love and ‘follow’ collections created by people with great taste.’
• In Pinteresting Facts at Pinteresting Facts , it says “What is Pinterest? That definition is changing, but the short simple answer is that it’s a social network where you can pin things of interest to you on pinboards. Followers can view your pinboards and pinned content, repinning if they like anything they see. However, a better definition for Pinterest could be made—a one word definition—’addiction.’”

In the article entitled Procrastinating With Pinterest? Turn It To Your Advantage, it mentions that “Pinterest began with a predominantly female audience, focusing on arts-and-crafts, clothing, interior decorating, and other things made of sugar and spice. “

You have to now ask for an invite. Then a couple of days later, you should receive an invite to join. It looks like it has more of a graphic emphasize – unlike Twitter – which is geared to sharing shore 140 character text updates.

I noticed a few friends from other social media sites started following me. Please don’t expect me to be a Pinterest superstar. I’m just getting my feet wet now.

Some usages

In the article entitled How Pinterest is Becoming the Next Big Thing in Social Media for Business, it gives this example:

“Perhaps the most powerful business application is the ability to post images of your company’s products on your Pinterest board and link them back to your website. It works as a sort of virtual store catalog.”

“But remember that this is social media. If you simply display images of your products without contributing other content or sharing other users’ pins, you’ll likely find that people don’t pay much attention. After all, no one likes a self-absorbed blowhard.”

Porn clones

One of the articles I referred to is entitled Perfect For A Lonely Valentine’s Day: Behold The Pinterest Porn Clones (NSFW). It doesn’t surprise me. I remember taking a philosophy class at the College of DuPage (i.e. COD) entitled business ethics. We had to partner with another class member and do a project from a list of topic suggestions. My partner and I did on the porn industry. I took the role of a porn producer defending the industry. One partner played a TV interviewer taking the opposite viewpoint. Both of us had to do a bit of research (i.e. looking at statistics and figures – not watching porn video clips). It doesn’t surprise me Pinterest became a target for clones.

I hope so. I can use some pointers from creative types or graphic artists.
