The Emerging Art Of Cell Phone Photography

Cell phone photography is a controversial topic. Purists of photographic art find it distasteful and crass. The opinion is similar to that which they displayed with the emergence of digital cameras. Digital photography is now a respected medium.
So, why the animosity? Perhaps it is a mournful longing for the days of film development; the slow and arduous process of anxiously waiting for a photograph to come to life. Perhaps digital photography and cell phone photography have stolen the “magic” out of the darkroom experience.
Or, perhaps it truly is the accessibility of the tools that ruffles feathers. At one time, an artist would have to pour a great deal of money into obtaining the proper equipment. Now, every regular Joe walking down the street has a camera in hand, and depending upon the type of phone, a very good camera.
There is always an elitist attitude from an art form’s standard bearers when a new medium emerges. But does that make it any less art? Certainly those who created masterpieces in during the Baroque period would look with disdain upon a Jackson Pollack piece, but does that diminish Pollack’s talent or vision?
As an experiment, I created a website called Cell Phone Artistry. It is an online studio that features user submitted photography captured via cellphone. I intended for it to be a slowly building collection of art, but it has taken off like wildfire. It seems everyone fancies themselves a handheld artiste! (Myself included)
