CandyBar 3.4.4 Brings Mountain Lion Support, Drops Price To Free And New “Unsupported” Future.
The Mac themers of the world no doubt know about a little app called “CandyBar”. The popular app has been around for several years and allowed those with an itch to tweak OS X’s UI elements an easy method to do so. But with Mountain Lion’s many great, new features comes the death of others – in this case features Candy Bar relies on.
In Mountain Lion, Apple has made it so the dock (and more importantly) Mac App Store icons cannot be changed. Given the company’s huge focus on the iOS App Store, it only makes sense that any and all software for the Mac platform will eventually be found in the Mac App Store and Mac App Store alone. The end result, of course, is a UI theming app that really can’t theme much.
Because of this, CandyBar developer “Panic” has finally pushed out the final version (3.4.4) with official Mountain Lion support, and in a bittersweet tone announced the end of the road for Candy Bar for the reasons mentioned above.
CandyBar now being free is awesome but no more (major) development or support is not. Still, there may be a future ahead. Panic says that CandyBar has been “officially handed over to Iconfactory”. Iconfactory, mind you, is a site full of UI goodies (and they’re responsible for the pixel perfect “Twitteriffic” Twitter app on iOS and Mac). If anyone can continue working some magic with CandyBar, Iconfactory is one of the better choices.
