VLC player on Windows 8 and WP8
Yes, WP8 has seen some unprecedented app traffic in recent times but the VLC player app isn’t about to be released anytime soon. The good news is that they have accumulated the amount required to build the player on Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 platforms – over £40,000!
The news is updated on their kickstarter project page where they also post the current progress of the project. While the team was originally only focusing on a Windows app, they now claim that the Windows Phone version looks a lot more feasible.
Looks like Microsoft is pitching in too – which is great news for users
We’ve been in touch with Microsoft representatives, who are thrilled about our endeavor and ready to collaborate with us. They are looking into ways of supporting us directly through non-financial matters, notably hardware, technical and design help. This is great news.
Since the fundraising is continuing, excess funds will be used to further reduce the timeline to release the product.
Some of the other features to be incorporated after the first release are:
- Camera Input Support enables users to record anything connected cameras can see and stream it live
- DLNA client and server integration for playback of media stored on DLNA capable servers on your Windows RT tablet or Windows Phone. Stream everything VLC can play on your tablet or Windows 8 PC to your DLNA capable devices (Xbox, etc.)
- Integration with locally attached devices for media playback and synchronisation
- Smartglass support
VLC being one of the truly versatile media players out there, we are eagerly await this app debuting on the Windows Phone market.
