AMD reveals new G series chips
The embedded processors of AMD are nothing new. These processors are designed for dedicated applications, which include casino games and infotainment systems. In this light the latest annouc comes as slightly unexpected. The G-series processor is revealing something totally unexpected. This is not merely a chip which contains for Jaguar cores. It also comes equipped with Radeon 8000 GPU and an I/O module. All this is fixed onto a single piece of silicon. This is an X86 chip, the kind AMD is used to making. The company places x86 on the chip. This strikes as a little odd as everyone already knows what kinds of chips AMD makes.
A company employee is saying AMD has imprinted x86 onto the chip because it is currently working on an AMD-designed CPU. These embedded chips will function as power envelopes for all the chips, from 9W to 25W. These chips consume less power, as low as merely 3W.
This news series could prove a big deal for the company which has so far missed on the low-power processor boom. So far AMD hasn’t gone below 4.5W. Its Temash tablet chips fall into that category.
This is the first time the company is suggesting churning out a general purpose processor. This will prove to be a huge challenge as Intel and Qualcomm already dominate that market. Although this moves comes a little late, it is always better to be late than never.
If this goes ahead fine, we may, in distant future, expect AMD optimised, Android powered tablets or operating systems. Those devices will match Snapdragon- or Exynos-based devices and still offer a longer battery life. But that is just a speculation for now. The company is not promising castles yet.
