Your Brain Cells Go Nuts When Watching TV

“I’m showing you slices of the brain,” Joy Hirsch, the Director of fMRI Research at Columbia University Medical Center tells me.

More specifically, she’s talking about some images of an fMRI brain scan she took while her subject was watching a video sequence.

“Every possible visual area is just going nuts,” she adds. What does this mean?

It shows that the human brain is anything but inactive when it’s watching television. Instead, a multitude of different cortexes and lobes are lighting up and working with each other to enable us, the viewer, to relate to the images flickering before our eyes and keep up with the subtleties of the plotline – to say nothing of the complexities in the incessantly twisting storylines of the likes of The Americans or Homeland.

Hirsch uses high tech fMRI machines, or Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, in her labs at Columbia and Yale to measure the brain’s activity in her participants when they’re watching video clips. The fMRIs work by tracking blood flow into and between the many different expanses of the brain.

The more blood, the more activity, which suggests that particular area of the brain is responsible for whatever activity is happening at the time of the scan – or so goes the theory.

Her research indicates that following the storyline of an edited film clip that depicts a visual action requires a complex and coordinated effort across multiple brain areas.

You might feel brain dead at the end of the workday when you plonk yourself in front of the TV and blissfully zone out with a beer and a favorite show, but Hirsch says that couldn’t be further from the truth.

In one of her studies, Hirsch suspects she might have pinned down the specific neural regions that are responsible for helping us to keep track of the storyline. She identified a “distributed cortical network” that’s only activated when the participant is shown a normal video sequence with a narrative flow – and crucially, not by random video shots or scrambled images.

      Correction: Idiot box.

Idiot box or propaganda machine is what I call it, most of the time..

The terms ‘programming’ and ‘remote control’ are more analogous than most care to realize.

        Yes they (The)

Agreed. This article is bs to convince people to keep watching propaganda. Ditched my tv a year and a half ago, kept nearly $800 in pocket so far.

I bought my first TV when I was 37. Since then, watching TV has turned my brain into jello. But I’m not sure which flavor.

barracuda.. a great piece here analyzing and correlating specific brain activity with television viewing.. that is, a great piece for those of us who read the article and actually understood it. not BS at all and certainly does not promote television viewing. more accurately to the point, it explains in part the how and why visual stimuli targets certain areas of the brain and elucidates methods being employed for manipulating viewers.. the link to “attention and brain activity while watching television: components of viewer engagement” is.. engaging, which, i already know that you, barracuda, are well aware of, the subject matter being part of something we “discussed” briefly more than a year ago. we also discussed (via comments) a paper you recommended to me concerning subconscious cerebration which i found to be a fascinating read called the mirror information processing hypothesis, so thanks for that.

this article along with the psychology study linked within, brings to light what television does to the viewer and provides an insight into how information and technology can and is being used to manipulate viewers. the implications are meaningful.

      • RAINSCRYPT

yes, meaningful implications.. and applications to other media such as video. videos that are circulating en masse as a collective disinfo psyop utilizing manipulation techniques as a means to confuse and deceive. take note of the massive number of videos that claim to analyze for the viewer, what is depicted visually, yet clearly do not tell the truth. it is brainwashing..showing you an image and describing it as something completely contrary to the image itself. lies. deception. illusion. trickery.
recognize these videos for what they are: a disinfo psyop designed to disengage the viewer from reality.

      • RAINSCRYPT

.. now take this in the direction of other media. internet sites and articles, and accompanying photos..
people, please note how certain articles insist upon explaining to you what you are seeing in the photos, that the articles describe. note again, that what you actually see, often does not coincide with what you are being told to see. is it because you are too stupid to correctly interpret what you are seeing with your own eyes? no. what you are really seeing is true. what you are being told to see, is a lie.
now why would that be? is the writer of those articles an idiot? many that i have read are actually sophisticated presentations.. i seriously doubt idiocy is behind them. heh, however, some articles seem less than well thought out, and the writers less than objective.. whatever the case, you are being manipulated. stay vigilant.
do not ever fall into the mistaken belief that television, is the sole media that manipulates intentionally, on a regular basis. all media has been corrupted.
