How to: Make a Levitating Star Wars Death Star
In this post, you will learn how to easily convert a simple levitation toy into an epic Star Wars centerpiece for your home or office. And honestly, who wouldn’t want a Death Star floating on their desk?! The process of building your own is actually quite simple. Let’s dive in:
The first thing you need is a $29 levitating globe along with some miscellaneous items such as glue, spray paint, a small drill bit, sand paper, a coin cell battery, and white LEDs. Oh, and of course you’ll need the Death Star blueprints. First, remove the plastic wrap of the earth to reveal a blank canvas. Next, cut a circular hole for the Death Star’s eye, invert it, and glue it back in place. Seal the edges of the cut and sand smooth.
Once the globe is sanded, apply an even coat of dark grey spray paint. Additionally, drill holes throughout the globe for a realistic lighting effect. Lastly, illuminate the globe’s innards by placing an LED, battery, and on/off switch inside the globe.
Use masking tape to create the iconic Death Star look. After respraying the globe with a darker shade of grey, remove the masking tape. If desired, you can use fiber optics to create a green laser burst as shown in the video below. For additional details, see here. Check out the final result!
