Review: M-Cloud Wireless Charger

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Charging a gadget hasn’t changed much in over a decade. Cable specs come and go. But at the end of the day, you’re still left plugging in a long leash of bundled wiring to sync electrons to and fro. Enter the future: wireless charging. While it’s not completely 100% wireless since the wireless base needs a power cable, the fact that your phone is free from the leash makes it so much nicer.

Mobile Fun was kind enough to send us one of the M-Cloud Qi Wireless chargers that they carry so we could put it through its paces and determine if the fancy charger is worth the added cost over a standard charger.

Design & Construction

Black plastic is a staple of the electronic world now that we’ve been freed from the beige hell that ruled over the digital world’s early days. When done right, black is incredibly awesome. It can also look incredibly cheap. In the case of the M-Cloud Qi wireless charger, we’ll be honest and say it tends to fall on the cheaper side of things as far as appearance goes.

The base of the charger can be kept flat or tilted upwards at a ~70 degree angle. The front of the base has a lip so that when it’s titled your phone doesn’t slide off.

Placement of your phone on the M-Cloud base has a decent amount of play. There’s roughly 1-2 inches of side-to-side movement your phone can do and still keep the charging active.

Wired Vs. Wireless

When you really think about it, you’re only saving a second or two when you use a wireless charger. Also, using it while it is attached and charging is more difficult and less comfortable than when you’re charging with a normal wired charger. Still, there’s something cool about popping the phone on the charger and picking it back up as if you’re just laying it down on the table. Even considering the ~$50 price tag for the M-Cloud charger, it’s worth it in the end to us. For those wanting a better designed charger, you’ll have to look elsewhere. That said, if the M-Cloud isn’t your cup of tea for whatever reason, any wireless charger is bound to make you feel all futuristic now anyway.
