LG G2 Android 4.4 KitKat Rollout And LG G3 Rumors Begin.
The LG G2 may not be doing all that hot in sales figures but one thing cannot be disputed: On paper, compared to other flagships, it is easily one of the best. Unfortunately, LG in particular isn’t the quickest or most consistant when it comes to Android updates for hardware. This time around, however, it appears they’re going to be more on the side of “on time” as recent leaks have pegged a once lengthy Android 4.4 update delay as much shorter and going ahead of schedule.
Today, LG has officially begun rolling out Android 4.4 KitKat for the G2 in Korea, keeping up with a previous promise to start before the end of the month. Information as to when other countries can expect the same update love haven’t been revealed, though the aformenetioned updated rumors have stated Janurary/February which is far better than old rumors (as late as April).
In other yet similar news, rumors have begun circulating around the G2′s successor already, for now cleverly dubbed the “G3″. The Korea Herald is reporting that a G2 replacement is already nearing a release as early as “early 2014″. The G3, as it’s called, will allegedly feature some sort of fingerprint technology. Unlike Apple’s fingerprint technology, the implementation in the G3 will supposedly be of the swipe variety (see: HTC One Max) instead of the tap + hold of the iPhone 5s. Other specs rumored include a 2.2 GHz octa-core processor and 5.5-inch QHD 1440 x 2560 display all set to debut at Mobile World Congress with an actual retail launch sometime in the months after.
For LG to prevent themselves from becomming another HTC who has seen marketshare and market relevance drop like a rock in the last couple of years thanks to Samsung, LG is going to have to do more than just play catch up with me-too features. Fingerprint tech – me too. Higher res display – me too. How they implement said features and whatever in-house flair they build into them is what will help set them apart. Can they do it? I’m skeptical that it’ll be a quick turnaround. The G2 is the best Android phone on the market IMO at the moment (disclaimer: I own one as a daily driver) but even I can understand it has done very little to revolutionize Android as a whole, much less challenge the current pro-Samsung environment Android is in.
Here’s to hoping LG can get better at supporting hardware with quicker software updates, that any software enhancements they build on aren’t just gimmicky copy-cats of someone else and that new hardware can really bring us something new and exciting.
