Weather Forecast for January 14, 2014

11AM: Low pressure moving through the Northern Plains will head into the Great Lakes this afternoon. This will bring light snowfall from the Dakotas to the Great Lakes. There will be showers ahead of the cold front from Ohio back into Missouri. High pressure will dominate the weather from the Southern Plains and Gulf Coast back into the West.

11PM: Overnight low pressure will push into Michigan bringing a wide swath of light snow from the Great Lakes into Southeast Canada. High pressure over the Rockies will keep the West dry and cool. Partly cloudy skies will prevail from the Gulf Coast to the Southern Plains.

Significant Weather Threat for January 14: There is a freezing rain advisory in effect for part of the day over Maine as widespread light freezing rain is falling over the region. Multiple winter storm watches/warnings and winter weather advisories are in effect. There is a winter storm warning in effect for places around the Great Lakes and back over the Black Hills of South Dakota along with parts of the Rockies in Montana and also Wyoming. Winter weather advisories are in effect for the Northern Plains and into portions of the Great Lakes.

Storm Outlook: A low pressure area is now moving into the Gulf of Alaska bringing with it moderate winds, seas and areas of showers along with moderate snowfall to the area. Another low pressure system is pushing through the Northern Pacific Ocean bringing increased winds and seas to the open Pacific. The third low is pushing away from Japan and will continue a north-northeastward track over the next 24 hours.

Extended Outlook:

Day 2-6: The period will start with low pressure pushing through the Great Lakes, while high pressure dominates the rest of the country with partly cloudy skies. On day three another clipper system will push through the Northern Plains bringing light snowfall to the region. This will extend into the Great lakes overnight. The rest of the country will enjoy sunny to partly cloudy skies. Day four will have the clipper system moving through the Great Lakes with light snowfall, while the rest of the country remains dry with high pressure dominating the weather. The period will finish with low pressure moving through the Northeast bringing a light area of snowfall to the region. High pressure will continue to dominate the rest of the country with dry weather.

Day 7-11: The period will start with high pressure dominating all the United States with a tranquil weather pattern, however we will be watching a possible developing low in the Southwest Gulf of Mexico. On day eight the low pressure will push into the Northern Gulf of Mexico and will bring showers to the Gulf Coast. Another strong high pressure area will be plunging in over the Northern Plains with another round of very cold weather. Day nine we will be watching a large storm system moving up the Eastern US. This will bring coastal rains along with bands of heavy snowfall to the region. High pressure will build in over the Plains bringing a bitterly cold air mass to a good portion of the Eastern US from the Rockies eastward. The period will finish with another clipper system moving through the Northern Plains and Great Lakes with another round of snow. Behind that another strong high pressure area will slide in from Northern Canada bringing yet another round of cold weather southward.

Day 12-16: The period will start with lake effect snows for the Eastern Great Lakes, while a weak disturbance develops along the Gulf Coast bringing rain showers to the region. A strong high pressure area will slide into the Northern Plains with yet another shot of cold air. An upper level trough will push some snow showers over the Rockies and the Northern Plains. High pressure will keep the remainder of the region dry. By day 14 another Gulf low will begin to develop bringing showers to the Gulf Coast, while strong high pressure dominates the rest of the country. On day 14 we will see another strong low pressure system moving up the Eastern US. This will bring rain to the coastline and moderate snowfall inland. The trailing cold front will bring showers to the Gulf Coast and Southeast, while a few places in the Tennessee River Valley could see a wintry mix. High pressure will again be sliding in over the Northern Plains bringing another round of cold air to the region. A new low pressure area will start to take shape over Western Mexico and slowly push towards Texas. The period will end with a storm system along the Eastern US creating a lot of impacts from heavy rainfall to heavy snowfall. High pressure over the Plains will keep the region dry and this will extend into the Southern Plains and over the Gulf Coast. High pressure over the Rockies will keep the Western US dry as well.
