Chinese Smartphone Company Xiaomi To Set Up Office In India

Rapidly growing Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi is going to set up shop in India soon. In an interview with CNet, Hugo Barra, former Google VP and current Global VP for Xiaomi spoke about the company’s next steps in an attempt to reach globalisation. Currently, Xiaomi is a Chinese only brand in terms of sales and localizations. Hugo’s job is to transition the company from a national Chinese brand to a global one.

Xiaomi is known for introducing value for money phones with some great hardware. Xiaomi uses a modified version of Android (MIUI ROM) which is tailored for a Chinese audience. However, after growing to become a huge smartphone company in China and receiving Applesque response to its product launches, the company wants to puts its hands on the the global smartphone scene. The first step in that plan seems to be India.

Currently, Xiaomi is working on creating relationships with potential Indian partners and carriers. It will be setting up and office in the country. It is also talking deals with content providers and game developers in order to localize their software to the Indian market, in order to raise its appeal among phone buyers. Barra has revealed that the company will be selling the phones from its own online portal, just like the way it does in China. However, since the brand is relatively unknown in the Indian smartphone landscape, barring tech savvy individuals. In order to spread awareness, it does make sense for the company to tie up with an Indian retailer, just like the way Motorola did with Flipkart to launch the Moto G and X.

Xiaomi makes phones catering to the extremes in smartphone pricing. It has budget phones like Redmi and it also has its flagships such as MI3. It will look to retail all these phones in the country without resorting to introduce the budget ones first. The company will be the third smartphone company in recent times, behind Gionee and Oppo, which is aiming to crack the Indian market. As we all know, the Indian smartphone market has huge potential and sales hinge on maximum values at affordable prices. Playing at volumes such as these would make it easy to keep the costs down for smartphone companies. Xiaomi’s phones have the approval of the Chinese and the global tech savvy users and it seems it could actually have a chance at cutting through the smartphone clutter in India and deliver a great product.
