Facebook Introduces Beta Program For Messenger On Android

Facebook has announced that it is entering its popular Messenger App on Android in beta. The social network is inviting users to test this app and give their feedback on the experience.

“Facebook Messenger for Android beta program will give people who opt-in access to the latest versions of Messenger for Android before the general release. As with the main Facebook application, our goals with this program are to expand our pool of testers and gain feedback across a more diverse set of devices. Simply by using the app and reporting issues, beta testers will be able to help us improve performance and the overall experience on a wide variety of Android devices at scale“, posted Facebook Software Engineer Luiz Scheidegger in a company blog post.

In order to sign up for the program users will have to these simple steps:

1) Join the Facebook Messenger for Android Beta Testers Google group:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/messenger-for-android-beta-testers

2) Allow beta downloads by clicking “Become a Tester” in the Play Store (you need to join the Google Group before becoming a tester)

3) Download Facebook Messenger from the Play Store to update your app

4) Turn on automatic updates, as the beta version of Facebook Messenger for Android will be updated multiple times per week

Facebook is asking the testers to report any bug during the testing period via the in-app dialog box. If you want to opt-out at any point, just leave the group and uninstall and re-install the app.

Facebook launched a similar program for its main Android app last summer. The social network touted that the app has more than 1 million daily active users from over 150 countries. It recently launched Facebook Messenger for Windows Phone earlier this month. The Messenger for Android underwent a huge revamp in October last year.

The free mobile messaging market has become extremely crowded with increasing use of smartphone. With Facebook acquiring WhatsApp last month, the social network is continuing to improve Messenger to stay in the league of similar mobile messaging platforms.
