Facebook Messenger For Android Allows Voice Calling in India

Facebook is heating up the instant mobile messaging space by adding voice calling feature to its Messenger service in India. The social network had first introduced voice calling in the US and Canada last year.

Users can now call other Facebook friends for free users using WiFi or 3G. In order to make a call you simply need to open a message thread with a friend and tap on the Android menu button and the drop-down option will show you a “Free Call” option. The Free call option is grayed out if you can’t call the person.

I tried to call a friend who uses a 3G connection,with Facebook Messenger from my Android phone and the quality of call was clear and did not go through a lag. You can even call from Chatheads and also use speaker phone. It even asks you to rate the call quality after you finish the call.

The latest feature brings Facebook Messenger in line with rivals like Skype, Viber , Line, Nimbuzz and others. Also, last month WhatsApp announced that it will start voice calling on the service from Q2 this year. In October last year, Google updated Hangouts for iOS in the US and Canada with a similar voice calling feature. However, the service is yet to roll out in India.

VoIP like instant messaging is gradually becoming the trend and both the new forms of communication is giving telecom companies a run for their money.
