Google Offers A Live Trending Map Of India’s Politicians In Revamped Elections Page

Google has offered a newly reworked Elections Page for the Great General Elections soon to be held in India.

Significantly extending the ‘Pledge to Vote’ campaign that the search giant exercised recently, Google has revamped the core Elections Page and has come–up with nifty Live Trending features that offer an instant glimpse about popular politicians.

The new Elections Page is now a more vibrant and continually updated sub–domain that is bifurcated into three separate sub–sections which are:

• A Google Score Tool for politicians
• Infographics on search trends
• Election playlists from YouTube that feature politicians’ Google Hangouts

The Score Tool is a Google Analytics based score board that shows just how popular the prime–ministerial candidate from each Political party is. The visual indicator takes cues from search activity for the respective person in the previous 24 hours using Google Search and YouTube and combines it with the amount of engagement with the person’s name on Google+. Essentially, the tool tries to pictorially represent public sentiments in a simple to understand popularity chart.

The other important tool that Google has included is the Pledge To Vote Reasoning Campaign that asks users who pledge to vote, to give their reason for voting and also lets them view other users’ pledges. This is represented on an India Map to show opinions against location that seems to give an idea about what the primary concerns and issues are and combines it with the approximate location of the person who has pledged to vote.

Google, along with other internet companies, is attempting to enhance user engagement during one of the largest democratic exercises. The revamped Elections Page is certainly an interesting approach that manages to gather exhaustive data from multiple sources and present it in an easy–to–understand format. Will such techniques affect the outcome?
