Google Search Trends Prove That The Upcoming Elections Are A Top Concern For Indians

Google has released its ‘Search Trends’ for the last three months and it overwhelmingly proves that the upcoming General Elections and associated topics is what drives the company’s India specific search.

The 16^th Lok Sabha Elections are right around the corner (schedule expected in two days) and perhaps Google is the one that is most aware of the issues which matter to people. This is because the Search Trends released by the company for the past three months reveal an increasing interest in all the topics surrounding and related to the event.

Indians are rightly concerned about the rampant Corruption and it has been the most searched for topic on Google Search Trends. If the recent Consumer Interest is considered then the Jan Lokpal Bill and associated issues continue to dominate the Searches. However, considering all the aspects the issue of Black Money and Corruption is one of the most hotly searched for topics.

Rahul Gandhi spurs search for historical data: The recent interview of Congress’ Prime Ministerial Candidate Rahul Gandhi, spurred numerous searches for archival data on old communal riots like the 1984 Sikh riots, as well as the relatively recent 2002 Gujarat riots which involves BJP’s candidate for the PM post, Narendra Modi and Muzzafarnagar riots.

From political perspective, the landmark and historic win of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi took center stage. Overall, all the three major Political Parties; BJP, Congress and AAP have engulfed the minds of the nation’s netizens who are now obsessed with finding out as much details (or dirt) on the candidates. Speaking of details, the Scams continued to remain an actively researched topic. Notable mentions include 2G, Coal Gate, continued to remain high in search trends.

The  General Elections have already proven to spark online searches and debates. The Bills which are on the verge of becoming a law like Sexual Violence Bill, Telengana State Bill, Women Reservation Bill and the ever–present Right to Information (RTI) act and issues too were searched.

With the elections about to take place soon, it will be interesting to see which topics influenced the voters, the most.
