Karbonn Launches Three New Smartphones, Eyes Rs 8,000 Cr Revenue In FY 2015

Popular homegrown smartphone maker, Karbonn expects its revenue to rise more than 60 percent to Rs 8,000 Cr in the fiscal year ending March 2015. The number three Indian smartphone brand expects to close the current fiscal with Rs 4,500 crore in revenues.

Giving insights about types of phone it sells, Karbonn Managing Director Pardeep Jain told PTI, “About 80 per cent of our handsets sold are feature phones and the remaining are smart-phones. We expect the ratio to change to 50-50 in the next fiscal.” The company is also keen to open its production unit in India sometime this year as currently it gets the phone manufactured from China, Taiwan and Korea.

Karbonn is gearing up to spend Rs 300 crore on marketing and sales and about Rs 400 crore on R&D during the next fiscal by putting all its focus on smartphones.  A recent report from IDC has revealed that smartphone sales in the country grew almost three-fold to over 44 million in 2013.  Karbonn had the 10% share in India’s smartphone market that is ruled by Samsung and Micromax at number 2. On of its expansion plans include launching 4G range of devices by the beginning of third quarter this year.

After announcing its plans and targets for the year, Karbonn also unveiled three new smartphones, powered by hexa-core and octa-core processors from Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek. The three Android Kit-Kat powered phone-Titanium Hexa, Titanium Octane and Titanium Octane Plus— at the MOP of Rs 16990, Rs 14490 and Rs 17990 respectively. ”We are the first Indian brand to offer KitKat OS to the Indian consumers. The smart-phone market in India grew by nearly 229 per cent in 2013 and the partnership with MediaTek will allow us to further consolidate our position in the domestic market,” said Jain in the report.

Earlier this week, Karbonn announced that it will launch dual OS smartphone that will support Android and Windows.  Also, it will launch only windows phone as the Microsoft is offering to provide its Windows Phone OS free for regional smartphone makers. The price range of the Karbonn Windows Phone will be from Rs 6,000-12,000.
