Microsoft’s OneNote Is Now Cross Platform And Free To Use

OneNote is part of the Microsoft Office suite, if somewhat of a late entrant compared to the other apps. A few days back, Microsoft announced that it is making a version of OneNote completely free to use for everyone.

This version of OneNote is available to download for Windows, Windows Phone, Mac , iOS and Android in addition to the web. This development will make the app accessible across multiple devices for users. The company has also announced additional improvements such as a OneNote Clipper, Office Lens, Email to OneNote and support for third party offers in order to extend OneNote’s functionality.

In doing this, Microsoft is targeting Evernote directly. Evernote has a huge lead on Microsoft as it made its service available on multiple platforms from the get go. Even though Evernote is free to use, it does have a Pro package. All the new features that OneNote has announced are similar in functionality to popular Evernote features, prominent among them being Clipper and Email to One Note. Office Lens is a Windows Phone app which acts as a scanner, which is again similar to Evernote’s OCR technology.

It is interesting to see that Microsoft’s focus is shifting towards accommodating more platforms, something I didn’t think possible a few years ago. Well, these are interesting times!
