Product Comparison Portal ShopAlike.in Is Visual Meta’s First International Expansion

Product comparison portal ShopAlike has set up operations in India.

Owned and operated by Visual Meta GmbH, which comes under Axel Springer, has chosen India as its first step to international expansion. ShopAlike.in will be the second entity after Carwale.in which was acquired by Axel Springer in 2010.

What will ShopAlike offer? ShopAlike.in seems to be following a hybrid model of eCommerce. On one hand it is offering an exhaustive platform to offer detailed comparison of products. The list of verticals that ShopAlike claims to offer comparison includes jewelry, fashion, home furnishing shoes, bags, accessories and apparels.

While the list of products that could benefit from comparison seems to be a bit odd, ShopAlike will also act as an online marketplace for other eCommerce platforms. But the company behind the endeavor has ensured that the other parties will have good exposure too. ShopAlike will offer complete virtual storefronts to the eCommerce platforms to display their own product catalogue on the site.

Normally, comparison based portals choose to display the particular product and then list the e–Sellers that claim to have the product. Speaking about the entry in India, Visual Meta’s founder Robert Maier quipped,

“We are very fast when it comes to expansion into new countries, but we also tailor fit our strategies based on the target country and market,”

Sure enough, ShopAlike alrady lists products from HomeShop18.com, Indiatimes.com, Firstcry.com, Infibeam.com and a few others too.

At the onset it might seem that ShopAlike is going to face tough competition from long–term established players like PriceDekho, FindYogi and many others, but the hybrid approach that the site has taken could set of a new trend of offering in–depth details for thorough comparison. Couple that with the ability to purchase via mini virtual storefronts of competition could open up a new era of collaborative online selling?
