Vodafone India To Soon Launch Wi-Fi HotSpots In Selected Metros

Vodafone India is gearing up to offers its users high speed internet browsing in areas with heavy internet usage. The second largest telecom operator is testing out wifi hotspots in metros like Mumbai and other such congested areas with dense internet usage. Vodafone customers will be able to access this wi-fi service without adding the username and password which is usually required to access a wi-fi network.

Speaking about the initiative, Vishant Vora, director, technology, Vodafone India, told the Times of India, “We’re trialing that in several metros including Mumbai. Wifi off-load is a developing technology and more functionalities are coming out which will make it more seamless. We’re trying to make the authentication seamless”.

Vodafone is spending about Rs 7,000 crores for this move with an aim to improve its data network in India. The companies Mobile Internet User Base grew by 38% in the 4th Quarter of 2013 to reach 45.7 Million and saw strong Data Usage growth among customers especially in 3G users.

Vora also told TOI that the company will add the ability for a user to easily shift from its existing data pack to the wi-fi hotspot and vice versa. While, the initiative sounds interesting, it will be interesting to see if the customers who are already paying almost Rs 250 per month for a 3G internet is willing to pay an extra sum for the Wi-Fi network.

Earlier in January this year, Bangalore became the first city in India to have free wi-fi hotspots. Also, there were reports last year that the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to provide unlimited access to WiFi at public places across the city. However, the project has still not seen light of the day.
