Dropbox Brings Mailbox To Android And Launches Carousel
Dropbox has finally launched its popular email app Mailbox on Android. Mailbox which debuted on iOS last year was widely praised for improving our current state of email overload and getting users to reach the previously mythical state of Inbox Zero. Dropbox has told users that an Android app was in the works and today’s launch shows how committed Dropbox is towards building digital products instead of just being a cloud storage platform.
Dropbox acquired Mailbox last year in March for the reported by price of $100 million just a month after the app was in private beta. The app has been popular for its unique focus on minimising email interactions by swiping.
If you short swipe to the right, the app will archive your mail and if you long swipe in the same direction, it will delete that particular mail. If you short swipe on the left side, it will snooze your mails to a preferred date or time. If you long swipe to the left, it will add your mail to a series of lists which you can access later. These swipe based interactions make it really very easy to deal with an out of control inbox situation. I was at Inbox Zero within a few minutes of using the app.
Another useful feature is Auto-Swipe which can learn from your swiping actions and automatically decide how to deal with your mails. It takes some time to figure this out based on your actions and hence I did not have a chance to see how good it is. The app currently works only with Gmail and iCloud accounts. Outlook.com support might be coming soon according to its website.
Besides this, the company also announced today that it is launching a limited preview of Mailbox for Mac. I hope that it comes to Windows and Linux soon enough. Additionally, Dropbox has also launched a photo gallery for Android and iOS devices which are meant to work with Dropbox’s mobile image sync feature. It is called Carousel and it combines your Dropbox hosted photos/videos with those on your phone.
Dropbox is making a major play for other digital services which have been either Google’s or Microsoft’s forte. It recently hired Dennis Woodside (Ex-Motorola Mobility) as its COO and promoted Sujay Jaswa to the CFO position. Furthermore, the company has also invited Condoleeza Rice to its Board of Directors.
