Techgig Is Organizing Code Gladiators, An India Wide Contest For Professionals

In an era where the ability to wrangle code can create a significant difference in your career trajectory, many companies have realized that encouraging more people to code could help talented people find more jobs and importantly solve some big problems. There is a whole ‘coding movement’ going on in the west and by the looks of it, this movement is just washing onto the shores of India.

India is no stranger to computer science, even though as a country of talent we have been passive when it comes to making breakthroughs in computer science. Our techies have been responsible for making contributions to global computing problems and yet here in India, there does not seem to be a positive and nurturing environment for computer science enthusiasts.

Techgig, which bills itself as the largest community of techies in India, is making an effort to get technologists and enthusiasts to get together and make themselves known to existing corporates in the country. With this aim of spreading the awareness of programming and computer science, Techgig has announced that they will be organizing what they call, ‘India’s first and biggest coding challenge’ in order to reward the best coding talent in the country. The contest is being called ‘Code Gladiators’ and its explicit mission is to bring attention to the best coder in the land.

The contest which will be conducted online will take place throughout the months of April and May. The final leg of this contest will see 40 top coders battling it out with each other in Delhi.

Avnish Anand, Business Head at Times Business Solutions, spoke about this new effort,

“The scale of this contest gives us an unparalleled opportunity to provide industry insights by creating detailed analyses of how coding ability varies across demography and present a host of benchmark reports including geographic, academic, institutional and corporate benchmarks. Such a study has not been undertaken before due to lack of scale and data.”

“While traditionally organisations have been wary of such competitions fearing that their best people might be ‘exposed’ – we are surprised to find that more progressive organisations have responded and 37 companies have already signed up, even before the official launch.”

Corporates have also seen the promise of holding such an event and have thus supported it. Akamai, Synechron, Schneider Electric, Symantec, Nokia Siemens, Sasken, Calsoft, Panacea, Informatica, Seclore, McAfee, Cvent and Unisys are some of the corporates who are participating in this event. Registration for this event is open to companies. These companies can enter 8 of their top coders to slug it out in an internal coding challenge to select the best one. This will be stage one of the event. The second stage will be Regional semifinals where coders from different companies will go against each other. The final stage, as mentioned above, will be held in Delhi. This final will be a live event.

Programming languages which can be used at the contest are C, C++, C#, Java, Javascript, PHP, VB.NET, Python, Ruby (Ruby on Rails framework) and Perl. Participants will be allowed to contest in multiple programming languages.

Applications for Code Gladiators are open till the end of April 2014 and companies can contact Techgig to figure out their registrations. As of now some 15,000 coders seem to have registered for the contest.
