Whatsapp Has Hit A New Message Handling Record

Whatsapp is seeing its highest message volume ever! The company announced today that it has hit a new record as far as daily messaging volume is concerned.

According to a tweet by the company, the service was used to send 20 billion messages and receive 44 billion messages in a single day. This means that the service handled a total volume of 64 billion messages in 24 hours. The disparity in the sent and received numbers is due to messages being sent to groups.

The new volume record suggests that Whatsapp has made significant improvements to its infrastructure. Whatsapp’s message volume has been growing rather rapidly since their launch. This has caused instances of outages due to scaling issues. Now, it seems that the infrastructure is well positioned to handle such huge volume.

The service also announced after its acquisition by Facebook that it had crossed 465 million monthly users worldwide, a number which has the potential to grow even further. However, challenging times may be coming up because their voice call feature will be introduced soon. This will increase loads on their system significantly. Their acquisition by Facebook is thus beneficial because the social network has dealt with these problems of scale and has managed to come out rather unscathed. Today, Facebook deals with a huge amount of daily activity and it may be well positioned to support Whatsapp in problems of scale.
