Advancing Technology and Healthcare Delivery to 2020: Part II

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Over the last 50 years, technology use has dramatically changed the world of healthcare – from the consumer, payer, provider and producer perspectives. Consumers are now more well-informed than ever, using the Internet to research their conditions, possible treatments and a pool of providers who specialize in treating their ailments. Providers are adopting electronic health records and collaborating digitally with others to streamline and collectively manage patient care. Producers are extending their reach beyond product and into value-add services. Payers are creating innovative payment models based on outcomes to help improve the quality of care and lower overall costs of care.

On Friday, June 6 at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel & Suites Downtown, beginning with registration and a networking breakfast at 7:30 a.m., the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) will present “Healthcare 2020: The Technology Vision Part II.”  The event will showcase local and national experts in the areas of healthcare delivery, patient engagement, population healthcare management and emerging technology.

Keynote speakers include:

  • Kenneth R. Jennings, PhD, head of Population Health Solutions, ACCRETIVE HEALTH
  • Alexandra (Alix) Goss, executive director, Pennsylvania eHealth Partnership Authority
  • Brett E Trusko, PhD, MBA, assistant professor, Mount Sinai School of Medicine; and editor-in-chief, International Journal of Innovation Science

Three panel discussions are included:

  • The ACO: An Annual Check-Up (moderated by Syndicus, Inc. CEO/President Michael McNees)

An Accountable Care Organization (ACO), made possible in the Medicare program by the new health law, is a healthcare provider organization that is accountable for meeting the health needs of a defined population, including the total cost of care and the quality and effectiveness of services. Five years later, have ACOs impacted healthcare quality and costs?

  • Disruptive Healthcare

“The theory of disruptive innovation was first coined by Harvard professor Clayton M. Christensen in his research on the disk-drive industry and later popularized by his book, The Innovator’s Dilemma, published in 1997. The theory explains the phenomenon by which an innovation transforms an existing market or sector by introducing simplicity, convenience, accessibility and affordability where complication and high cost are the status quo.” What should we expect to see in disruptive technology that will move the needle on healthy outcomes? Where are the opportunities that will leapfrog expectations?

  • Technology Enabling Better Health Beyond The Healthcare System

Practitioners and health systems that effectively engage consumers and provide meaningful interactions will stay useful and relevant. This panel will discuss how information technology is bringing forth a revolution towards “Person Centered Medicine” focused on health beyond healthcare systems.

Registration is now open at  For more information about Western PA HIMSS or the Healthcare 2020 program on June 6, contact Robert Sheesley, immediate past president, by email at [email protected], or by calling (412) 925-2956; or Liz Evans, president, by email at [email protected] or by calling (412) 594-3915.
