The red leather Bible sits on the control console of an Apollo lunar rover.

Soon, sacred scrolls and religious texts like the Torah, the Vedas scriptures and the I Ching might be next to join the Bible on the lunar surface.

“These three texts are among Earth’s most ancient documents, created over 3,000 years ago. They are significant to billions of people,” said group founder Paul Aouizerate of the “Torah on the Moon” project that is looking to raise €12 million to €15 million in funding for the project.

The idea is that our Moon should serve as off-planet storage for the religious, cultural and even genetic trappings of humanity. If our planet suffers offers a pandemic plague, nuclear holocaust, or lethal asteroid strike, or any other doomsday disaster that will wipe out all living beings, records of our civilization and all life on Earth will be stored on the Moon.
