With the release of Hololens everyone’s eyes are on AR and should be looking at Caputer Labs’ SEER.

11, February 2015: Everyone is looking at AR as a viable new technology that will help people in their everyday lives. Too few people are looking at SEER a new type of AR that was created by Caputer Labs. People are of coarse looking to Microsoft’s HoloLens which makes sense given that Microsoft has an already massive following however HoloLens does not have a lot of what makes SEER so great. The biggest issue people are having with AR is immersion and how the headsets actually absorb their users into their experience.
 

AR as anyone interested in the topic can tell you is aiming for the most immersive experience possible while allowing its user to continue about their day not only unobstructed but aided. With this comes inevitably FOV or field of vision. How much vision or scope of view will the user be able to see? A big complaint about the HoloLens at the moment is its small FOV in that it appears as a small sliver of visibility that can change when you look around however your focus is distracted by the items outside of the FOV. SEER dominates the market currently with FOV having by far the largest FOV at 100°. This proposes the question, what will one be seeing this on and how clear will it be?

This is another exciting part of SEER it is the only AR to use a free form optical lens. Free form optical lenses are lenses that have several techniques going into its manufacturing process that is specific to the lens itself, simply each is different. Free form lenses are capable of reducing glare, sharpening vision and can provide brighter and more intense colors. This is going to aid SEER in bringing its users sharper, more vibrant and clearer picture overall. HoloLens succeeds but in a different way. HoloLens specifically applies to its 3D hands free UI which though impressive struggles with matching light compared to light in a room or from the sun.

SEER compensates this by being interchangeable from AR to VR. This is another way that SEER stands out. By allowing for a simple noninvasive addition of a light fading lens SEER becomes a VR unit and one can watch movies or play video games on it with a 200” perspective. Since SEER has control flexibility one can control different media via joystick, controller, head and facial gestures, keyboard and leap motion or hand control. This makes playing video games in either AR or VR both intimate and rewarding. HoloLens is more specifically designed to be stand alone and lacks in this area. Its design is to be hologram oriented and doesn’t allow for the VR type of experience. Both units allow one to write their own code and support app development as well as having apps designed specifically for their units which include games. Both units also connect easily to many different digital devices.

When looking into new technology price is always a consideration because companies are looking to provide to a large audience. The word is still out on the HoloLens but estimates range from $300 to $1500 with experts claiming that any viable option would drive prices to below $500. Caputer Labs on the other hand are offering their SEER for $99 now on Kickstarter, which is excellent given all that has gone into it. Their hope is to reach millions and allow their users many different types of experiences. Give that this unit can change from AR to VR and has the worlds largest FOV buying this unit for movies and games alone is more than worth it.
