Alan Turing was making his model on what a computer should do, based on what a mathematician does, write symbols using pencils on a piece of paper. 

Pencils and paper are physical objects subject to the laws of physics. Why did Alan Turing think that a single symbol, an integer, a whole number, be fundamental. 

We know from quantum mechanics they need not be. Ultimate reality is continuous, uncountable number of points at the base of physical reality. The numbers however arise from discrete quantum states, from the application of these continuous laws to this particular universe we find ourselves in. So mathematical reality is shown to be DERIVATIVE from ULTIMATE physical reality. Mathematics is a branch of PHYSICS and not vice-versa.
