Russia making its own smartphone operating system
Russia is one of the largest developing countries in the world, right up there with China, in the mobile industry considering the development in the technology sector. It was rumored last year that the country is making a new smartphone operating system but it was later reported as untrue. Now, there is news once again that the Russians are developing their own smartphone operating system to compete with Android, iOS, and Windows mobile OS.
Coming to the official confirmation, this operating system is being developed by Open Mobile Platform on the top of the Sailfish OS. Yes the Sailfish OS, the product developed by the Finnish company Jolla, formed by former Nokia engineers. The Minister of Russian Communication Ministry, Nikolai Nikiforov, tweeted last month about the initiative to develop a new Russian mobile operating system, for which the Russian company Open Mobile Platform is hiring developers, testers and security engineers.
In early 2016, Nikiforov talked about the possibility of an Android-alternative in Russia. He discussed the possible partnership with other BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) members to develop this operating system. Meanwhile, the country is also working on the development of its own version of Tizen OS that can be used on smartphones, tablets, laptops. They are hiring local engineers to port Android and iOS apps to Tizen OS as well as Sailfish OS.
If this OS comes with great features and customizations, it can compete with Android OS and Windows OS that are currently ruling the smartphone market in the country. As the days pass, we may see this operating system in few months. Stay tuned for more details.
