Popular Science believes there is a Flat Earth?

Is the earth flat? Well in 1931 they believed it was. An article titled “Ten Miles High in an Air Tight Ball” in Popular Science in 1931. Here is a link to the original article located in Political Science Archives online.

This article describes what the scientists saw when the when 10 miles earth. The lift of begain in Augsberg, Germany.  They ascended in a black and silver air tight aluminum ball carried aloft by a huge yellow balloon. Inside this aluminum ball was Professor Auguste Piccard, physicist and his assistant Charles Kipfer.

After 17 hours and being thought of as dead they balloon came back to earth.  The higher they climbed in the balloon the bluer the sky got. They took samples of this “blue air” thinking it would have high concentration of ozone (O3). This “blue air” is also responsible for the heaviness of this layer sometimes called “Radio Roof.” In other words this layer keeps the radio signals from getting past this layer. It possibly keeps lots of other things from reaching further than this layer.  Their maximum height was 15,781 m (51,775 ft).

Their balloon eventually descended in Austria  where they landed on a glacier. Luckily for them that is descended when it did because they only had an hour of oxygen left in their airtight flying ball. This was not Auguste Piccard’s only flight in this manner.  Piccard made another flight in a balloon in 1832 and he surpassed his record of the previous flight. This flight the maximum height was 16,201 m (51,153 ft). He when up an additional 27 more balloon flights with the last one breaking the previous record at 23,000 m (75,459 ft).
