Well, we found enough coal within a hundred and eighty miles of the south pole in great region of mountains, that’s not covered in snow. Enough to supply the whole world for quite a while. In fact, there’s evidence of many other minerals . . .

Historical records suggest that humankind have explored the northern extremes since 325 BC, when the ancient Greek sailor Pytheas reached a frozen sea while attempting to find a source of the metal tin.
 

 RESOURCE: COAL
  There are coal deposits found along the coast of Antarctica.  It is also very wide spread throughout the Transantarctic Mountains.  These deposits were formed when Antarctica was covered by ancient swamps/water.  Coal forms in swamps as plants die and are buried before they can be completely decomposed. They are then covered by other sediments such as sand and mud.  This burial allows the hydrocarbons in the coal to be preserved for future generations to use.

RESOURCE: GOLD
GEOLOGISTS have found significant quantities of gold in Welsh coal and believe the discovery may prove to be more than a scientific curiosity.

Rod Gayer and Professor David Rickard, at the University of Wales, Cardiff, found gold concentrations as high as 4.42 grams (1.55oz) per ton in the ash left over from burning coal.

Professor Rickard said higher concentrations may be possible and because coal is such a huge geological deposit.

“The researchers say it is the first time that gold has been found in coal. One of the amazing things is that we can see the gold under a microscope and take pictures of it.”
