Icelandic Volcanoes Hyped?

There are many recent videos and articles regarding a supposed volcano expert from Iceland who claims that 4 volcanoes on Iceland are facing imminent eruptions. Should anyone know much about volcanoes they know that eruptions rarely come out of nowhere and that seismic activity is the cornerstone and benchmark for raising a volcanoes’ potential eruptive status.

When looking at Iceland’s seismic history it is true that more earthquakes in frequent clusters are occurring in not just 4 of Iceland’s volcanoes but several others as well. Following suit to this seismic upswing we are seeing similar activities in most of earth’s volcanoes; North of Yellowstone, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Italy, Central and South America, Indonesia, Japan, and Russia all are recording an increased seismic trend in almost all known volcanic zones. This does not mean that tomorrow 4 of Iceland’s volcanoes will erupt.

Looking at the fact that it was one of Iceland’s volcanoes that was responsible for a plummet in temperatures leading to widespread famine in China and Africa, but an impending eruption would entail a VOA alert. And to this day there are no orange alerts being issued for any of Iceland’s volcanoes.

How does one know when a volcano is going to explode? Generally there are hundreds if not thousands of small shallow quakes which precede eruptions about 98% of the time. So while we all were nervous about Iceland creating a new ice age the fact of the matter is none of Iceland’s volcanoes are currently considered “imminent eruption” unless of course you are looking forward a year or 2.
