This Makeshift Bazooka Was Used to Fire Contraband Over the US Border

When it comes to smuggling contraband, criminals have developed some very creative ways over the years.

This method, in particular, is far more outlandish than a stealth submarine or a pack mule: a makeshift bazooka consisting of a tubular mechanism and a compressor, along with 203 marijuana packages weighing a total of 1,800 pounds, has been found inside a van near the Mexican border in the town of Agua Prieta, Sonora.

Officials say the drug packages were stored in charges to prepare them for the airborne journey. The bazooka then used compressed air to fire the drugs over the Mexican border through the van’s sunroof.

Incidents of drug cannons have been spotted as far back as 2013, where a similar device was used in a pickup truck to transport drugs from Mexicali to Calexico, California. Similarly, 2016 also saw the capture of a van (also in Agua Prieta, no less) with a hole in its roof which housed a 10-foot air cannon in the back.

This 2017 version of the pot projectile is more discreet and compact, making it harder for law enforcement to discern from a normal ice cream truck. And while we don’t condone any form of drug trade, this is one of those times where necessity is indeed the mother of invention.
